The original words to the hymn we know as Lord of the Dance were from a Shaker hymn called Simple Gifts. 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'tis the gift to come down where you ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight. Refrain: When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed. To turn, turn will be our delight, 'Til by turning, turning we come round right 'Tis the gift to be loved and that love to return, 'Tis the gift to be taught and a richer gift to learn, And when we expect of others what we try to live each day, Then we'll all live together and we'll all learn to say, Refrain: 'Tis the gift to have friends and a true friend to be, 'Tis the gift to think of others not to only think of "me", And when we hear what others really think and really feel, Then we'll all live together with a love that is real. Refrain: Until I googled this I only knew the first verse and refrain and didn't know it had other verses. Seems very appropriate for this evenings unrest. Viv

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 5 Dec 2004 23:14

O Maz!!! I am sobbing so hard I can hardly see! I was on the harbourfront at St Ives one day when they landed the body of a fisherman from the fishing boat which went down with five men. The Vicar was there to receive the body and suddenly, one of the old fishermen started to sing "Abide with me". Others took it up and there must have been 150 people singing. It was the most moving thing I have ever heard in my life and cannot now hear even the first line of it without being reduced to tears. Now, Maz, will you sing that other old Cornish Funeral Favourite - "O Valiant Heart" - I have never yet been on a coach trip in Cornwall where someone hasnt sung that one! Sue Although I like Lord of the Dance I have never understood how it got in as a Hymn. To my mind, its spooky and brutal. I know its late everyone, but keep singing!

Some of these remind me of my childhood. I went to a Cof E primary school and still go to church 3 or 4 times a year, but not religous. Fond memories of "There is a Green Field far Away" and "Morning has Broken". Love Christmas Carols especially "In the Bleak Mid Winter" My favourite hymn is:- LORD OF ALL HOPEFULNESS Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at ourlabours, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord at the end of the day. My last offering of the night is..... The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at Thy behest; To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest. We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping, While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day or night. As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. The sun that bids us rest is waking Our brethren ’neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high. So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never, Like earth’s proud empires, pass away: Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. Goodnight and God bless until we meet again. Bryan is this it? 'll Walk with God from this day on. His helping hand I'll lean upon. This is my prayer, my humble plea, May the Lord be ever with me. There is no death, tho' eyes grow dim. There is no fear when I'm near to Him. I'll lean on Him forever And He'll forsake me never. He will not fail me As long as my faith is strong, Whatever road I may walk along. I'll Walk with God, I'll take His hand. I'll talk with God, He'll understand. I'll pray to Him, each day to Him And He'll hear the words that I say. His hand will guide my throne and rod And I'll never walk alone While I walk with God. Kathleen

One of my favourites for the end of the day Now The Day Is Over. Now the day is over, Night is drawing nigh, Shadows of the evening Steal across the sky. Now the darkness gathers, Stars begin to peep, Birds, and beasts and flowers Soon will be asleep. Jesus, give the weary Calm and sweet repose; With Thy tenderest blessing May mine eyelids close. Grant to little children Visions bright of Thee; Guard the sailors tossing On the deep, blue sea. Comfort those who suffer, Watching late in pain; Those who plan some evil From their sin restrain. Through the long night watches May Thine angels spread Their white wings above me, Watching round my bed. When the morning wakens, Then may I arise Pure, and fresh, and sinless In Thy holy eyes. Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son, And to Thee, blest Spirit, While all ages run. Viv

Just for Benjamin One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go; from the old things to the new keep me traveling along with you: Refrain: And it's from the old I travel to the new; keep me traveling along with you. Round the corner of the world I turn, more and more about the world I learn; all the new things that I see you'll be looking at along with me: Refrain As I travel through the bad and good, keep me traveling the way I should; where I see no way to go you'll be telling me the way, I know: Refrain Give me courage when the world is rough, keep me loving though the world is tough; leap and sing in all I do, keep me traveling along with you: Refrain You are older than the world can be, you are younger than the life in me; ever old and ever new, keep me traveling along with you: Refrain Viv

Sung with more vigour than accuracy, it's the first hymn I remember, for its wonderful, clashing rhymes (and I might have missed out some boring lines in the middle): Marching beneath the banner Fighting beneath the cross Trusting in him who saved us Ne’er shall we suffer loss Singing the song of the homeland Loudly our chorus rings We’ll march to the fight In our armour bright At the call of the king of kings

Lord of the Dance I danced in the morning When the world was begun, And I danced in the moon And the stars and the sun, And I came down from heaven And I danced on the earth, At Bethlehem I had my birth. Chorus: Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he I danced for the scribe And the pharisee, But they would not dance And they wouldn't follow me. I danced for the fishermen, For James and John - They came with me And the Dance went on. Chorus: I danced on the Sabbath And I cured the lame; The holy people Said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped And they hung me on high, And they left me there On a Cross to die. Chorus: I danced on a Friday When the sky turned black - It's hard to dance With the devil on your back. They buried my body And they thought I'd gone, But I am the Dance, And I still go on. Chorus: They cut me down And I leapt up high; I am the life That'll never, never die; I'll live in you If you'll live in me - I am the Lord Of the Dance, said he. Chorus:
