I have in my family a Jem Mace who is a distant cousin. He was originally from England was a Norwich fighter, he became Britains first World Heavyweight Champion, and the last of the great bare fist fighters. There is a life size bronze statue 12 miles from the city of New Orleans close to the edge of the Mississippi River, of Jem Mace and Tom Allen who contested the first Heavyweight Championship ever held in the United States. It took place on May 10th 1870. The statue marks the spot where the fight took place.

Peter Report 21 Dec 2004 20:52

Sue My Nan also proved it, but all the paperwork was lost after she died. So I'm having to start again. The link is via Nelsons youngest Sister. So if yours is direct to him that would make us cousins

Nobody famous in mine. Ag labs galore with a smattering of Blacksmiths and Masons. Oh and a Mayor of Gillingham.

Sue Report 21 Dec 2004 20:40

Well Peter, It seems you and my husband will be (sort of) related. He was brought up with the story of being related to Nelson, and I've proved it!!! It was his Nans story, Its all a bit distant, but there is a link, through marriage. From there I got to Winston Churchill, then Diana Spencer, In fact once you get into those realms the is no end to it all. I am assured there is a link to George W Bush. I'm not too upset that I've not found that one! Suex

My mum told me earlier this year that my dad has a cousin called Boardman and mum thinks that the cousin is the mother of Chris Boardman the cyclist. Haven't got the proof yet. I am trying to find an address so that I can write to her. Mel

Peter, Don't think they are linked. Our Jeffreys is spelt the same way as the Judge and not with 'ies' at the end. Oh well, back to the research. Jacky
