I have in my family a Jem Mace who is a distant cousin. He was originally from England was a Norwich fighter, he became Britains first World Heavyweight Champion, and the last of the great bare fist fighters. There is a life size bronze statue 12 miles from the city of New Orleans close to the edge of the Mississippi River, of Jem Mace and Tom Allen who contested the first Heavyweight Championship ever held in the United States. It took place on May 10th 1870. The statue marks the spot where the fight took place. |
