I wish I hadn't been at work all evening. This quiz looked like a lot of fun!

Thanks Geoff LOL Yvonne - not mean at all (after all you DID cheat)

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:31

The A9 used to end at John o' Groats (which is now reached by the A99). It now ends at Thurso, having been renumbered from the A895 (north of Latherton). The A8 used to end at Gourock but now stops a mile or two short at Greenock.

Just got out an old map (1967) and it looks like the A4 ended at Avonmouth? I think you are mean not letting me have Bristol..................

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:29

Gooff The A5 used to be the rout to Ireland via Hollyhead. After passing (in the old days going right through) Shrewsbury and Oswestry it sets off across the mountains of North Wales round lake Bala. At Anglesea it became quite narrow and dangerous for trucks so the A55 was developed with links to the M56 and M6

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:26

Yes Yvonn but it goes past Glasgow to (I think) Gourock. Maybe the Scottish contingent will help

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:23

Cheers Bob, I thought there had to be an explanation for the M6.

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 22 Dec 2004 19:22

A guess here, but as the M8 goes from Edinburgh to Glasgow, was this the route of the old A8?

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:21

Nell, on my map (OK, year 2000) the A55 joins the A5 near Bangor and the A5 continues to Holyhead. Looking at www.streetmap etc, both continue to Holyhead.

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:21

So: A1 - London to Edinburgh A2- London to Dover A3- London to Portsmouth A4 - London to ??? A5 - London to Holyhead A6 - London to Carlisle A7 -Edinburgh to Carlisle A8 -Edinburgh to ???? A9 - Edinburgh to Wick

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:17

Helen It is now but it used to be the A5 Geoff The A6 originallytook the line that is now the A! and the A1 went through Finchley and Barnet (now the A1000). You are right about Carlisle though.

Unknown

Unknown Report 22 Dec 2004 19:11

The raod that ends in Holyhead is the A55!

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 22 Dec 2004 19:11

Unknown

Unknown Report 22 Dec 2004 19:10

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:10

Yvonne I hope you didn't cheat.... The A6 and A4 are wrong though

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:09

There doesn't seem to be any A6 south of Luton any more; I have an old map (1960s) where it seems to branch off the A1 near South Mimms, but can't see it south of there at all. It seems to end at Carlisle where it becomes the A7.

A1 - London to Edinburgh A2- London to Dover A3- London to Portsmouth A4 - London to Bristol A5 - London to Holyhead A6 - London to Manchester A7 - Carlisle to Edinburgh A9 - Edinburgh to Wick Hard to tell these days when the motorways have taken over!!
