The A1, A2, 3, 4, 5 and A6 all start in London. Where do they end? Also - What about The A7, A8 and A9. Where do they start and finish?

There doesn't seem to be any A6 south of Luton any more; I have an old map (1960s) where it seems to branch off the A1 near South Mimms, but can't see it south of there at all. It seems to end at Carlisle where it becomes the A7.

The raod that ends in Holyhead is the A55!

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:17

Helen It is now but it used to be the A5 Geoff The A6 originallytook the line that is now the A! and the A1 went through Finchley and Barnet (now the A1000). You are right about Carlisle though.

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:21

So: A1 - London to Edinburgh A2- London to Dover A3- London to Portsmouth A4 - London to ??? A5 - London to Holyhead A6 - London to Carlisle A7 -Edinburgh to Carlisle A8 -Edinburgh to ???? A9 - Edinburgh to Wick

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:21

Nell, on my map (OK, year 2000) the A55 joins the A5 near Bangor and the A5 continues to Holyhead. Looking at www.streetmap etc, both continue to Holyhead.

A guess here, but as the M8 goes from Edinburgh to Glasgow, was this the route of the old A8?

Geoff

Geoff Report 22 Dec 2004 19:23

Cheers Bob, I thought there had to be an explanation for the M6.

Bob

Bob Report 22 Dec 2004 19:26

Yes Yvonn but it goes past Glasgow to (I think) Gourock. Maybe the Scottish contingent will help
