America wants to rule the World yet cannot provide a reliable electricity supply to a country which only takes up about a third of the North American Continent?

Crista Report 24 Dec 2004 00:28

Come on you guys! If you experienced the storms/snow/hurricanes/tornadoes/extreme temperatures we have here you'd be without electricity too! Some parts had 29 inches of snow yesterday. Crista

Come on Graandpa Jim - the big storm was it 87 - we living in this fair land were without electricity for 8 or 9 days - it was over a week and although we live in a village we are only 4 miles from a large city and it took me 7 months of fighting to have the contents of freezer paid by insurance. Our country grinds to a halt - leaves on the line, frost and 4 inches of snow. Play fair.

Brian could the reason you had electicity was that you were in married quarters and the camp was working hell for leather on the back-up generators??

Cheers Fred! Click on this map to enlarge it. It's not even night yet and it's -20 F or -28 C in Minnesota. It's even cold in Texas. http://www.weather.*com/maps/currentweatherusnational.html It's in Fahrenheit. Crista

badger Report 24 Dec 2004 00:41

I can remember that Brian ,but don't forget that the water and electric on the camps in aden were the responsibility of the army and air force and had huge ,automatic back up generators ,which is why the supply was so good.Fred.ptfg.

ChrisofWessex Report 24 Dec 2004 00:57

Brian - way I read it you were being dug out in Aden! Must be the late hour. I too was in marr. quarters in the 62/63 winter and the personel were busy helping the farmers dig out and get feed to the cattle. Wish I had never mentioned the Canadian weather now! Living in Bulford the kids used to love to see snowflakes as they knew the chances were the following morning we would be snowed in and no school!

The weather out here is unique. The cold Canadian air collides with the warmer Gulf air and creates huge storms and winds. It's colder in Canada than Siberia right now and that doesn't happen too often. The wind damage is probably what caused the power cuts. I doubt there's anytime the UK has had more than 29 inches of snow in 24 hours. Crista

Having spent a year in aden Brian ,and another two years in the gulf ,i think i can remember where it is ,i also know all about the snowstorms which i was glad to miss so i don't think sarcasm is called for friend ,which is most unlike you by the way .Fred.ptfg.

Stu, You don't really mean that do you? I thought some parts of the country were going to get snow Sat? Crista

Crista

Crista Report 24 Dec 2004 01:24

Brian, Drifts don't count as accumulated snowfall because the wind moves and redistributes snow. Your family were lucky because many villages were cut off and power lines where brought down that winter. Crista

Crista Report 24 Dec 2004 01:26

Stu, Nothing here but I'm sure some parts of the midwest will be happy for you to have some. If you bring a shovel they'd like you even more! Crista

ChrisofWessex Report 24 Dec 2004 01:44

Brian - if our power supply is so flaming wonderful - why was this village without for so long in 87 and that has not been the only time - on another occasion we were without for 5 days - I only mention the occasions when the contents of freezer have been lost. This was not a thread meant to cause arguments - but merely a comment on the snow/ice storm in Canada. Ann

Crista

Crista Report 24 Dec 2004 01:49

Ann, My parents were without electricity for 10 days and water for at least 3 days in '87. Did they have an ice storm too? That's the big issue because the weight of the ice brings dow the power cables and trees too. Crista
