How many remember there very first job after leaving school. How old were you, and how much was your first pay packet. I was 13 years old (1959). I was a copper coil winder, for the backs of radio's. My first weekly pay packet was 10 shillings. 5 shillings for my board at home, and the rest was mine. I thought i was rich!! Tony Oz

Kb That's what I thought, I must have been in the wrong job. Well I was in an office hated it, started at £10.00 a week. But like Mags I got half of what was left after the taxman the stamp (as it was once called) and my Mum took their bit. That left me about £3.50 for buses, lunch and anything else. I was always broke. no change there then. LOL. Pat x

With my 5 shillings i could go to the Pictures ( 3d ) Buy a packet of fags ( 1s 6d ) Craven A. 10 pack. Shout myself a whole watermelon (6d.) Buy 1s worth of lollies ( a bag load ) and still have some left to bank. Todays equivelent in Oz is appox 50cents. For 50 cents to-day you couldn't buy a packet of shoelaces. Tony Oz

Theresa. Yes, i remember Hannams. So your at Montrose. I'm in Nunawading now. Lived at the Basin and Bayswater 1970s, Wantirna 1980s,Mooroolbark,1990s. My Grandad in the late 40s worked for Allen's music store, as a piano tuner. My dad and his brother were musician's, and played at Ted Rippons Hotel in Auburn, in the 50s. I also have a great love for music, and play Classical Guitar. One of my daughters is a Piano teacher. ( seems to be in the blood. ) Cheers. Tony

Tony you seem to have moved around as much as we have , we went from Mooroolbark to Glasshouse Mountains QLD, then Croydon, Chirnside park, Mt Evelyn very briefly, then Mooroolbark again but i think we will stay here in Montrose for quite a while yet, at least i hope so, tired of moving. Allans music as you probably know was taken over by Brash's. then Brash's went bust, but i noticed an add the other day for Allans music, seemed very strange. Theresa

Hi Tony, I used to work every term holiday and have literally worked at all the Department stores that Melbourne once had..Mutual Store, Ball and Welch, Coles, Woolworths, Myers, Foy and Gibsons etc, etc...nearly forgot the doughnut shop in Swanson St..I think they were all slave labour camps, as I don't remember ever feeling rich, until I started full employment as an usherette at the Regent Theatre in Collins St. We used to work shifts, which was great, because I could still go dancing on my nights off, can't remember how much the pay was though. My first job was in the Post Office at Frinton-on-Sea in 1945, a few days after the war ended. I was 17 and my wages were 38 shillings. I've just realised I haven't got the pound sign on the computer, probably because I am in Australia. Sylvia in Perth Western Australia

My Dad and Brother were fanatical Tiger supporters..brother still is...I've seen quite a few games too! I used to go dancing at Glen Iris, Coburg and Brunswick town hall, that was a big problem getting home to Bentleigh, everything stopped at midnight. Sundays I used to go to Mornington to rock and roll..on my boyfriends motorbike, pillion..my dad would have killed me if he had ever found out lol. Kaye
