There was a champion racehorse that was trained at Whitsbury, near where we used to live. Not sure of its name though. Joy

The BBC use the music from the film 'Champions' for their coverage of the Grand National. Lovely piece of music - I love it (loved the film too). Kxx

The 1981 Grand National provided a triumphant ending to a tale of a crippled horse and a cancer beating jockey. Aldaniti had suffered two bouts of tendon trouble and a broken hock bone. Bob Champion had been given eight months to live after being diagnosed with cancer. Throughout his long illness ,Bob Champion continued to watch Aldaniti's progress . Josh Gifford had bought Aldaniti at the Ascot sale in May 1974 and performed wonders during training. Gifford made a promise to Bob Champion that his job as stable jockey would be there following his recovery. On the 4th April 1981 Champion and Aldaniti set out to win the Grand National. By the 11th fence the pair had taken the lead. Their joint dream came true, both had overcome all to win the Grand National and Aldaniti was the first winner since Sundew in 1957 to lead throughout the final circuit. Middleham, up near Wensleydale way in North Yorkshire, have a stables open day, each Good Friday, where you can look round the stable yards, plus there's other entertainment laid on. Been a few times, in particular in 1994, when both Desert Orchid and Red Rum were there - one of Rummy's last few appearances as he passed away the following year. Other major racehorse training centres (Newmarket, Lambourn, etc) have open days as well.

gr g 1979 by Grey Mirage out of Flower Child Desert Orchid is a legend. There is no other other word for him. His four King George wins made Kempton Park his second home. Add to those the 1990 Cheltenham Gold Cup and an Irish Grand National and you have one of the greatest steeplechasers the world has seen. His achievements did not scale those of Arkle but the bold front running style and precise jumping of this silver coated hero made him one of the most easily identifiable racehorses ever to grace the turf. Now in retirement he leads the annual parade before the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day and has his own fan club.

Sometimes when things go wrong We try to understand Why the world stops turning And takes away the things we planned And sometimes we walk alone No one appears to care Sometimes we long for someone To be the answer to every prayer When through the mist of my tears I saw you I knew I'd waited for you To find all the dreams that lost their way Who knows if we will win God knows we won't give in There is no yesterday now There's just today now To find my way with you Some say that miracles never happen But now I know they happen When love comes along to show the way Who knows if we will win God knows we won't give in There is no yesterday now There's just today now To find my way With you -----------------------------------------------------------------------
