Hi My husband has been round this area since the late 50's & has heard of both of these. Not sure what it refers to - thinks it might have been a local joke! Penny

Yes. Although I understand there has been flooding and subsidence in Sandridge.......................don't know about the salt mines in Tyttenhanger though! He always used to threaten to take me there................................

Jackie I've never heard of those expressions, but they may have been current when your grandad was younger. I can only imagine they are jokes as there are no salt mines in Tyttenhanger and no docks in Sandridge - tho' I believe there is a Pirate playarea! nell

And whilst I'm about it is there anyone out there of Herts. origin who knows the backgrounds to the expressions "Tyttenhanger Salt Mines" and "Sandridge Docks" - or were they just my grandad's silly sayings. J
