No, I don't think that it would be a good idea to open pubs and clubs for 24 hours. I think that it would encourage more binge drinking. It has been said before that other countries that have 24 hour opening times, dosen't encourage binge drinking. I believe that over in this country, they would not be used to that so, therefore, binge drink. Nicola xx

I can not see the problem with this. Bars COULD open for 24 hours but I doubt many will. They will stay open when it is profitable. As for binge rinking there are currently laws that should prevent bar staff serving drunk customers. It seems to me that the police do not use the powers they have at the moment. Also the leicensing regulations can be used to prevent neighbours being troubled in residential areas I seem to remember all the same points being raised when all day drinking was introduced. would anyone go back to the 3pm close 5pm open, 2pm and 7pm on sundays? I don't think so. Bob

Part of the trouble in the UK is the licensing system which for years encouraged the separate development of pubs (only alcohol served, children not admitted); cafes (non-alcoholic drinks only); and restaurants (alcohol only with food). Contrast that with the Continental system with less onerous licensing so that alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks are served with or without food to all ages in one establishment, thus encouraging a wide range of ages and activities in one setting.

well, years ago, when the newspaper industry was in fleet street, the local pubs had permission,to stay open until 6am,so that the nightshift ,finishing around 3am,could have a drink, and relax, before going home...apparently,it worked well for many years! bryan.

It would ease the 'turning out' time at 11 o'clock and two o'clock situation but the English have a different life style ... they go out to get drunk ... more time....more drink

In Europe they have a different culture to us, they drink and are friendly, people in England tend to get into a fight when they have had a drink. Personal opinion only.

Margaret

Margaret Report 21 Jan 2005 21:50

No not really, but it would give you a chance to have a drink when you felt like it. Surely nobody would drink all the time, they couldnt afford and maybe after a while it would settle down and we wouldnt notice or would we?
