My sister - (a coward at the best of times) has just had a root filling started through a birdge! She's had the root drilled out and packed until next week when the filling goes in. She wasn't particularly bothered by the experience - the waiting was worse!! She also went back to work afterwards!! (I've got yellowish teeth, but no bridgework etc. only 4 fillings I had put in over 35 years ago!!) maggie

Sorry Andy but it hurts. Had one done years ago then about a year later the same tooth played up again so "outed" it. Malc

Andy, I've had several done over the years and ended up having to have all the teeth removed and replaced with 'posted' crowns some time later, although not all at once. I'm no coward with dentists, but root canal work can be painful and can last some time, depending if you've got an infected tooth and how long it takes to drain away the infection and/or treat it with antibiotics. That needs to be done before a new filling can be added. CB >|<

I've had a couple done. Its a longish job but caused me no bother whatsoever. My jaw was frozen for a hour or so after, which caused coffee to dribble down my chin. The first one I had done is still intact after about 25 years and I am unable to tell is from a normal tooth. I suppose the trick is to get a good dental surgeon Len

i have had three andy.what they do is drll out your tooth and then clean out all the dead nerves from the tooth.that is replaced by what i think are little rods but i don't know what they are made of and ushed into the teeth then the tooth is filled.they are quite pricey well mine was as i have cosmetic fillings.set me back just over £100 xxxxxx(:

Had one done near the front at the top, wasn't too bad having it done, but after a few days my face became swollen and had to go back and be given another course of antibiotics, after that everything was ok. Val

I fussed to have it done, scared a nagging pain would flare up. Absolutely no problem with the root canal work (except to my purse). It was the filling on top of that that caused the problem. The same dull ache is back again and it sounds as if I either see a specialist (£££££) or have it out. Think I'm with Rose on this one. B

I can't understand why a lot of people are saying the treatment is horrible and painful. I've had it done several times and as long as you've had a numbing injection there's nothing to worry about. I say have it done and save the tooth!!! Good Luck, Pam

Hi Andy, I am the biggest coward going when it comes to dentist but during a course of detal work I had to have 4 root canals done together, I went to a specilaist dentist as this was classed as a minor operation as the had to cut my gums open. I can honestly say it was not so bad, if your nervous, tell the dentist and he can totally numb the area I had an injection in the joint between both jaws and it froze most of the bottom half of my mouth. The noise is probably the worst thing my dentist gave us a walkman to drown this out, see if you can take one with you. There may be a bit of bruising, and ache due to the fact you have to keep your mout open for so long while they work, but I am sure he will prescible pain killers. I am sure it will be OK, and better that than toothache. Good Luck Sheila

well andy, i'm the most terrified dental phobic in the world,but i did have a root canal done last year...its takes a couple of sessions lasting 40 mins, but honestly i did,nt feel anything..and was totaly ashamed i'd been so afraid...i've got a good dentist who is very gentle...can't speak for other dentists...i have heard of others having bad experiences....jean

Well, keeping my fingers crossed that I don't need it doing but the one consolation is that the dentist is a bit tasty and well worth seeing again, lol.

I know what you mean Claire with dental pain. I had a filling years ago and then it affected the nerve, which in turn went VERY VERY sensitive, when I went to sort it out I had to have the whole thing packed and take antibiotics for a week before the infection went down, when I went back for the root filling I nealry shot through the ceiling, but others I had done were nothing as bad, only think it gets like it if it is badly infected?? From bitter personal experience-DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD.hAVE IT OUT. mUCH LESS BOTHER

I've had one done Andy, it was a good few years back, don't remember it being any different to a normal filling except they drill much deeper into your tooth so it takes a bit longer, l had a root filling and the nerve removed, or is that one and the same thing?? P S good luck with yours.

Yes and it's not too bad (and I don't enjoy dentists). So long as it's numbed up properly it's just a bit more poking about than usual.

Oooooh there's loads to it and it hurts like hell!! Don't wish it on yourself!
