Started on a low dose of medication and have to see him in six weeks, Had a good old cry about it last night but then i suppose thats how i felt about it silly me. It has been very interesting reading the comments about it which has helped Thank you everyone, Margaret

Now I am confused. I was told that I had a borderline underactive about 6 years ago. I have blood tests for diabetes every 3 months, so get thyroid tested at same time. It has never changed. I do have nodules on the thyroid, but not cancerous. I get regular ultrasounds done and they are getting bigger. I think it is known as a goitre. It is not visible yet, although i can feel a lump. I can still swallow so it is suggested I leave it for now. Some people have them removed for cosmetic purposes. I do not take medication, I do have difficulty losing weight, but I am never cold. I do get very tired. Perhaps I don't get cold because I live in Queensland Austrlia and it's always warm.

Julie, Mine is well and truely borderline. Consultant says no thyroxine till it tips the balance so G.P. cannot prescribe it. T3 is not low enough yet either. Used to have yearly blood tests but now down to 6 months. Scan revealed nothing sinister. Viv

My mum had an over active thyroid but had the radioactive iodine treatmeant which made it it go underactive which is apparently easier to treat. She is now on medication for life. My mum has been told by the doc that tyroid trouble is often hereditary. Mums mum died of a heart attack in hers 50s in Ireland in the early 1970s with no apparent other typical heart attack symtoms and it has been sugested that perhaps she could have had an undiagnosed over active thyroid which would have put her heart into over drive and made her have a heart attack as in those days this was not recognised

My hubby also has an underactive thyroid and takes thyroxine. He did put lots of weight on at first but had just stopped smoking and blamed that. He had all the obvious things like dry skin and always being cold too. He has been on his treatment for about 4 years now and the only real side effect is that he soon feels cold. He still buries under the duvet at night otherwise he can't get warm. He still hasn't lost the all the weight but still isn't smoking! Maggy

Like Dawn, I've just had mine removed (on the 7th Jan). I had a growth on one side of it. They only actually removed one side of it. Had results on lump yesterday and it is benign. Have to hve blood test this week to see if thyroid is now functioning ok. Surgeon said thyroid should function ok, even if only half of it left. Also took 2 of my (calcium) glands out). Dawn: hope you are recovering well. Jackie x

Mine is 'dodgy' , just on the brink of being underactive. They wont put me on thyroxine until it goes under. Have a slight goitre which feels odd sometimes. Voice has dropped, can't keep weight off, sleep alot, get depressed easily. Sister and first cousin also have underactive thyroid. Probably heriditry in my case. Viv

Lizz, I was like you too. I had seen so many doctors because I was gaining weight and all they did was put me on a diet. I was in hospital in Nigeria, and then I was in St Bartholomews Hospital in London on a 500 calorie diet and still they said all I needed was a diet. I was wearing a winter coat in the summer because I was always cold. As soon as I got in the car I fell asleep. I had a puffy face and dry skin. This was all 40 years ago and now just take tablets every day. Sylvia xxx

If it's over active then, depending on the severity, you will probably be given a radio active iodine drink or surgery to remove the gland, if the gland is removed or too much iodine given then you will "go" under active and be put on Thyroxine tabs. for the rest of your life, with yearly blood tests to check all is o.k. The upside is, you never pay for another prescription ever again even if the prescription is for other than your thyroid medication. if it's under active then you go straight onto the Thyroxine. I have been on thyroxine for four years now and am fine, it may take a couple of goes to find the right dose for you. Hope this is clear and helps. Tricia

Dawn

Dawn Report 28 Jan 2005 11:22

It will probably be an underactive thyroid then, you lose weight with an over active thyroid and put weight ON with an underactive thyroid. Dawn
