My next door neighbor smokes weed out side his back door at all times of day and night and the smell is even coming into my living room even with all the door and windows shut also into my bathroom which is next to where he stands in his garden. The smell really makes me feel awful. Any suggestions what to do . Should I approach him about it or report him. My husband and I are both in poor health and it’s making me very uptight. :-( I really don’t want to fall out with them and I sound like an awful neighbor but it is getting me down.

If you don't want to fall out with him, could you just ask him nicely if he would mind going to the other end of the garden to smoke as the smell is making you feel ill. Ask politely and just stress that you are in poor health anyway. That way you are not asking him to give up and not suggesting that you want to get him in any trouble.

Depends on how reasonable he is.

How well do you know your neighbour? Do you normally pass the time of day with him or have you not known them long?

If you do say good morning etc... then maybe you could say, can i have a word please. As Kath said, explain you both are not well and was he aware that the smoke was drifting in through your windows. Say you not interested in reporting him as none of your business but if he wouldnt mind moving further down, you would appreciate it.

If he is ok and quite amicable about it, then problem solved. If however he gets a bit abrupt and takes offence, you may then have to think about whether you take different approach and report him.

Is it private properties you live in or private rental or council?

Hope you get the problem resolved soon.

Hi Florence.
It is private properties.
We do get on with them but are not over friendly.
He has got quite a temper on him as we can hear him sometimes but never towards us.

I think I will go and have a quiet word as you and Kath have suggested.
Thank you both .x

Well, plucked up the courage to go and speak to my neighbour and was very polite about it .
He really denies smoking weed etc and said it was another neighbour that backs onto our house.
Not too sure if I believe him but then I dont know if he would own up to it or not.
I appologised for accusing him if it was not him.

Next time we get the smell I shall have to have a good roam round the garden and see if I can track down the smell where he says it is coming from. :-S

Guess he wouldn’t admit it just in case!

Wonder who is it in his garden that stands near your bathroom window then ?

Time will tell if the smell stops :-D

Well done AnnMarie!

My last neighbours had a shed next to my fence.
When their 2 boys reached teenagehood, it became a 'den' for them and their mates.
As time went on, I noticed a certain smell emanating from the shed.

One day, I was in the local shop, when the lads from next door came into the shop - they'd obviously just come out of the shed, and stunk of weed (or , most probably, skunk).
I sidled up to one, and suggested, before they came out, they got changed after a session in the shed, as they absolutely reeked of weed.
Well, I don't think the poor lad was expecting a fogey to know about such things, and was possibly worried I'd tell his parents - but logic indicated they probably knew, and the lads weren't hurting anyone else but themselves.

However, they were extremely polite to me after that! :-D :-D :-D

Well done, must have taken some guts to speak to him. Think I would have been a quivering wreck after he denied it. Unless you can lean out the bathroom window and snap a pic of him, not sure what else you can do.

However he now knows you are on his case, so may just go elsewhere to smoke whatever!

Keep us posted

Well, he (or someone else) obviously smokes it outside, as they don't want to stink their house out, in which case, they should respect their neighbour not wanting their house stinking of it!

Not sure if it is a coincedence or not but no smell last night.

Florence, I was worried about speaking to him and didnt sleep much the night before. He was so laid back when he denied it that I said to my husband that if someone had accused me of that I would have been annoyed.

I wait with baited breath to see if we get the smell again. x

unless he has spoken to the real culprit?

AnnMarieG

AnnMarieG Report 1 Nov 2021 11:15

Bobtanian, I dont think so as the one he mentioned is at the bottom of our gardens. We all have high fences so cant see each other although he could have gone round there .
It is a possibility though.
As long as the awful smell has gone I dont care who has been informed. :-S
