Actually, it isn't, Gwyn

It's all down on one sheet of stiff paper, a map of Vancouver with the 5 collection neighbourhoods in different colours. You can either pin it up on the wall as we do, or keep it in a drawer, or whatever suits you.

You really just need a quick glance to see colour and day.

Goodness Sylvia.
That sounds very awkward and complicated.

We received our new schedule for compost/recycle pickup a couple of days ago ......... it covers the next 14 months. The new city calendar for garbage has not yet arrived.

The city is divided into 5 regions, colour-coded. So you7 just have to find your area colour, ours is blue, and just see how that moves forward 1 or 2 days when there has been a Stat holiday.

Th hard work is seeing the circle around the actual date every 2 weeks which designates garbage collection as well as compost and recycle.

The numbers are quite small, and the circle is a very narrow black line :-D

OH takes off his glasses, bends down, gets as close as he can to where we pin up the calendar, screws up his eyes, and eventually decides "yes" or "no".

Pick-up at the moment is today (Wednesday) and it will stay that way until after the May weekend holiday on Monday 24 May when we move 1 day forward to Thursday.

Well the 'might / might not' communication arrived today, - only an A4 folded leaflet this time, but wonder of wonders, our 'new' collection day is Tuesday.

No change there then.

...and we are keeping to the same fortnightly collection schedule.

Why write 2 letters to tell us though ?

Bobtanian Report 17 Apr 2021 16:22

our bins used to be emptied on the monday, and if a bank holiday, overtime was needed on the tuesday...so they eventually moved our collection day to Tuesday.....

They will write to you again ...... but might not ;-)

Makes me glad I don’t live in Kent anymore.

Well, our council really does know how to waste money !

Towards the end of 2020 we had delivered our useful little calendar about which week, which bin would be collected and noting any possible changes re. Christmas etc.

At the moment we have household rubbish and recycling collected on alternate weeks and an opt-in garden bin collection the same week as the recycling.
A small food caddy is collected weekly.

Earlier this week, all households in the district had letters, in envelopes telling us that from a certain date in May, our collection day might change,,,, but it might not.

Our time of day for collection might change..... but it might not.

It might mean that we get recycling / household rubbish collected 2 weeks in a row...... but we might not.

Garden bin collection will be as at present.

Don't worry about all this, because we will write to you again nearer the time.

I wonder how much that information cost?

Ah I misinterpreted the automative bit I had the impression of some sort of robotic contraption on the side of the truck not a driver with a lever :-D that comes of seeing a video of my granddaughter receiving a food delivery from a robot from the next estate to theirs

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Apr 2021 05:40

bet they bought the trucks from the same supplier :-D

Allan

Allan Report 10 Apr 2021 05:33

Our trucks are the same, Sylvia. :-)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Apr 2021 03:19

Ann ................

there is no magic connection!

The trucks look like an ordinary garbage truck, except they have a lifting device at the side of the truck, operated by some sort of lever in the driver's cab. It comes down and grabs the wheelie bin, lifts it up and over the top of the truck, lid comes open, and the contents fall itno the truck's insides.

We just have to put our wheelies at the edge of our property, but not encroaching onto the lane, and make sure it is not too close to a tree, a telephone pole or whatever that could hinder the movement of the "lifter".

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 9 Apr 2021 07:54

I don't think we have any automotive bin collecting trucks in UK, If we have I have not heard of them. I assume your bins have to be in a precise place Sylvia or maybe there is some sort of radio connection between them and the truck. I remember many years ago somebody saying computers will do the work of humans and one day we won't need humans, Well!.......

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Apr 2021 02:28

Our collection is done along the back lane .......... OH has to move the wheelies, boxes and bags to the end of the driveway so they sit neatly positioned just at the edge of our property and away from any obstructions, so the automated garbage and compost trucks can lift the bins and empty them in to the truck.

Real men have to pick up the boxes and tip them into the collector along the side of the truck, and tip the papers/cardboard/etc in to their correct place.

Quite the performance to watch!

Gwyn, our bin has our house number on the side but I remember seeing adhesive floral bin panels for sale in a Kleen-ezee (not sure of spelling) catalogue several years ago.

nameslessone Report 7 Apr 2021 09:10

Ours are boring too. Numbers stuck or painted on.

When we lived in East Kent we had no front gardens. However, when the wheelie bins were brought in I was pregnant so I was able to get my bin collected from the rear gate, which was accessed from the other side of next door, Down the side and then turn. :-D

My daughter has the narrow pavement problem, so tries to put her bin out late at night, so not to inconvenience many pedestrians.
She must be near the beginning of the collection route, which is supposed to be timed for 7 a.m onwards. One day, she missed putting the bins out in the evening, but got up to put them out early morning only to hear them being collected just as she went out the door just before 6. 35 a.m.

Do people decorate their bins near you?
Some have some wonderful adhesive stickers showing flowers or garden scenes.
Ours just have stick-on numbers.
