Tonight. I won’t go into it entirely as that could raise problems on the boards. Somebody doesn’t like something about me and it’s something that I cannot change. Even though my point of view is the same as theirs because of what they let’s call her Anne(made up name) dislikes about me Anne doesn’t think I should be allowed to express it. Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face.

Just ignore and make it clear that Anne is a name you just made up please.

Tawny

Tawny Report 6 Mar 2021 20:35

Anne is a name I made up. What she is saying though amounts to racism and it hurts no matter how many times I experience it.

Tawny Report 6 Mar 2021 20:57

Reported but it still hurts. I am Tawny Owl, I’m married, a stepmother of four and I work. I love genealogy. Does anything else really matter that much????? I have my own political views and I would rather someone take aim at that as I may not agree with the opposition but I can live with it. However I cannot change who I am.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 6 Mar 2021 21:03

And why should you change ? I was bought up to be myself .not to put on airs and graces. If someone doesn't like me for who I am or how I look they can get lost (my I am polite tonight ) :-D

I was born in West London and have an accent to match even though I haven’t lived there for 35 years. Let’s just say someone in the country I live now took exception to where I was born. This is despite the fact that I have records going back more than 200 years showing my link to where I live now.

My records include a parent, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and great grandparents going back to 4x great and likely beyond but the names are very common and difficult to trace. I am descended from a long line of John son of John grandson of William , great grandson of William and great great son of John 3x great son of William etc...,

LaGooner Report 6 Mar 2021 21:26

I was born in North London, still loud, still gobby and a I still have my strong accent :-D I now live in Bedfordshire .Again I say if you don't like it you have to lump it as this is me :-D :-D :-D

Tawny, you don't have to prove anything. You are you, you cannot change that, and, as LaGooner quite rightly says, why should you.

The views, opinions. or whatever other words want to use, of offensive people are not worth the time or trouble upsetting yourself over.

Easier said than done, I know, but I would hope that on this site at least that the person who has abused you is in a minority of one.

Just keep being yourself, Tawny, nothing and no one else matters.

Where my grandfather was born the life expectancy for a man was just 54 when he was born. My grandfather died of a heart attack at 60 having seen one of his children and the first in the family go to university. My grandfather was stubborn and determined man who wanted more for his children than was expected for him. No male in recent generations which goes back to my 3x great grandfather has seen 70. My dad’s brother died of cancer at 68 in 2019 and my father is now 67 but in good health. My grandfather’s stubbornness lives on in the current generation and I am who I am like it or lump it as I can’t change it nor would I want to.

I also live in Scotland but am not Scottish. When I first arrived I went to work in a very pro-Scottish town, and on arrival at the office I was astonished to be asked what nationality I was. I said British, but that wasn't what they meant. So I did a bit of quick thinking and said I was Welsh (true as I was born in Wales) which was OK!!

OH is Scottish and proud of it, but he says the Scots are the most racist people he has met.

Don't you worry, Tawny, just try not to react - it gets easier with practice. :-) :-)

Tawny, there are self opinionated ignoramuses like you've come up against everywhere!

I don't have a 'set' accent - I moved too much as a child, and had to change the way I spoke, just to 'fit in' - and, in some cases, to be understood! :-S
We moved from Malta, where we spoke like Enid Blyton characters, to the North of Scotland - just in time for me to start school.
I developed a Scottish accent pretty quickly!!
Then we moved to different part of Scotland- different accent and dialect.
Then to Cornwall, where I had to change the way I spoke, just to be understood. Then to Devon - and yes, the accent is different - and so it went on.

In Devon, an Asian boy joined the primary school. Not only was he bullied because of the colour of his skin - they took the mickey out of the way he spoke.
They'd never seen a 'furriner' before.
I became incensed at their behaviour, and bolshy 9 year old me pointed out that he could actually speak TWO languages - could they? No, of course not.
As for the colour of his skin - why the hell do they try to get a tan like his every summer? Are they just jealous of him? I also pointed out that I (black hair and olive skin) was midway between his colouring and theirs - it's just different degrees on a colour chart - same with hair.

Now, my accent changes, depending on who I'm speaking to - it's usually a type of 'Ampshire' - but I am 50% Cornish, some Hampshire, a lot of Suffolk, and can speak in those accents/dialects. Am I meant (according to this person) to alternate my accents?

As for this 'person' not believing you have long links with where you live, because of your accent - well, to be frank WTAF!!?
How dense is she?
She'd probably be the first to deny any person of colour has deep 'roots' in the UK - I mean, as far as she's concerned, all 'Brits' must be white!
She'd also probably be shocked to learn how many 'white' people have black ancestry.

She's spouting balderdash through ignorance.
I bet she thinks she has the 'perfect' family.
Maybe you could suggest she tried a bit of genealogy, and sit back to wait for her to uncover a skeleton or two! :-D :-D

People are strange.
I am a southerner, I live in the south and received, what I can only call abuse, about being a southerner from someone born northish. Yet she was prepared to live here.

She is not a very nice person and made her dislike of me very obvious. It was her problem, not mine and I never made comments of her upbringing. Luckily I haven’t had to see her for 12 months.
