Oh Vera, I can just picture the scene. I bet the children talked about your jelly for some time to come.
Lidded moulds reminds me of my 'adventure' with some.

We lived overseas in 1970s and Tupperware parties were popular. I bought some individual jelly moulds, which had interchangeable seals, so one could have a flower, star, bell etc on the finished dessert.
One Christmas, I had an idea to use these seals and make my own chocolate tree decorations, which I would cover with tinfoil.
I melted the chocolate and poured it into the seals to make shallow moulds.
Within a few minutes, the Tupperware melted and I was left with a chocolate / plastic congealed mess on the worktop, which had to be prised off with a fish slice before the heat did too much damage to our rented home.

I think we all have those daft moments. My daughter’s birthday is in the summer and when she was 11 we took 8 youngsters off for a birthday picnic in a country park nearby. We loaded both car boots with party food and ball games, piled the kids in the two cars and set off, me following OH. After about a mile I could see dark, sticky stuff like oil dripping from the bottom of his car so flashed my lights at him till he stopped. We unloaded the children onto the grass verge and he climbed under the car. After several minutes of muttering, he crawled out somewhat grubby and said he would have to empty the boot. That’s when we discovered that my idea of making a jelly with coca-cola wasn’t quite so brilliant after all. It was in a sort of lidded mould. In the heat it had fizzed up and lifted the lid a bit and was gradually dripping through the boot. The children thought it was hilarious. OH was not amused.

susie that was one of those moments you wished you could wind back time ten minutes and start again. Had one of those many years ago when not married long. We were rushing to get to work, OH had cut himself shaving and was putting TCP on it (1960) Luckily we had no carpet just tiles on the floor. I asked him the time he flicked his wrist to look at his watch. Yep the open TCP bottle was in that hand. Can smell it now.

Still chuckling here, Susie, and it's not as though I have never done anything daft without thinking. OH would say 'plenty of times.' :-D

I think my main emotion after straining the turkey bones was rather loud cursing!
I'll try picking the green tomatoes ( altho some are tiny ) and find an empty drawer ( fat chance ) to put them in - thank you.

Sylvia, this morning I emptied one of the cutlery drawers and have done what you said. I'll try to remember to let you know the outcome. :-D

I like sliced lemon pieces cooked along the top of both chicken and fish. They are lovely to eat when crisp - and, best of all, because OH does not like them in that way, they're all mine!

Sylvia, I still don't understand how you have an empty drawer!! :-S

Liz, I put a cut lemon inside a chicken when I roast it - and keep it in when I cook the bones.

Interesting flavours in my mind now, ladies.

If I cook chicken bones, I usual add parsnips, the flavour is lovely . You just have to take the parsnips out before they disintegrate and then add to the liquid after straining the bones. If I have cooked the chicken with an onion inside, I put the onion in to boil up too.

We turned daughter's bedroom into a den with a hide-a-bed after she married 21 years ago, and I've tried to ensure that there was room in the closet and a couple of empty drawers in there for when we have visitors.

Unfortunately, the space does tend to get filled when no-one comes to visit :-D ....... but I still have one small drawer in there that I can quickly empty when necessary!

That recipe sounds yum, Kath. I am going to ask OH to forfeit some of his gluten-free bread so we can both try it. :-D

What's an empty drawer?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Oct 2020 18:26

CornishSue ................

you can ripen green tomatoes inside.

Pick them now, lay a tea towel on the bottom of an empty drawer, lay the tomatoes on that, trying to make sure they don't touch, and cover with another towel, then close the drawer.

Check every 2 or 3 days

Try not to forget .......... as I often do. :-(

I remembered 2 or 3 days ago that I had some green tomatoes in a drawer that I'd put in there over a month ago :-0

They had all turned red, but luckily had not dried out too much, so we're eating them now.

OH brought in another branch from one of our tomato plants, about 6 green tomatoes of varying sizes on it. So they are now in the drawer.

I've found this works better than leaving them on a windowsill.

I try to keep one drawer empty, or able to be emptied, just for ripening tomatoes in late September and October.

Stop it Sharron, you're reminding me of Thora Hird doing her best not to smile - and failing. :-D

Oh, so refained (not refined as we know it) when faced with the Vicar on one side and Compo and gang on the other. :-D
