Daughter uses algorithms in the Environment Department.

I just looked up what algorithms are - and I've used them - but we called them 'calcs'

However, I came across this, and am confused:

"Whether you are aware of it or not, algorithms are becoming a ubiquitous part of our lives"

...it's the 'a' before the 'u' - but 'an' doesn't sound right :-S :-S :-S

See what they mean there.

I would still tend to write an ubiquitous part .....

but say - a ubiquitous part ....

And I think I'd be wrong as 'a ubiquitous part' still sounds wrong - although I can be a lazy speaker at times.

"Must do better", springs to mind. :-S

Before my education I forgot to mention that I don't care what one is and if I did care, I would look it up.

At the moment, I am looking up something else I didn't know about until this morning, the Anarchy between 1135 and 1153. Much more interesting.

I was quite tooken aback when reading some bumpf about TOM TOM sat navs..

it stated that the Algorithm used was protected under patent.....and woe beware anyone trying to reverse engineer it.....

Never seen a definition! But if Rollo's definition as a "set of rules" is correct I see increasing problems with their inextricable incorporation into AI governing formulas with no scope for appeal.

Hampshire County Council appears to have 'outsourced' their recruitment, and to ensure 'fairness' are using an Algorithm.
I worked in a department all last year, and, when the job became permanent, they asked me to apply, as they wanted to keep me on. Unfortunately it was 'out of their hands'
My manager checked my CV etc, positive that I would get the job.
I didn't - apparently the algorithm, or child in charge, didn't know what a GCE was, because, it seems, I needed 'A' to C' GCSE (which a GCE is) in subjects, but 'didn't fulfill this part'!.
I contacted the recruitment team and pointed out their error - the application form now states what GCSE grade a GCE covers - but I still didn't get the job.

If a human had been involved, surely they'd question how someone appeared to get to University with just a GCSE grade C in Maths! (I took that when I was in my 30's)
