Mr Owl and myself have a good marriage and we always discuss important things like money. However the one thing we do disagree on is what goes on a scone first. What does everybody think is it jam or cream first?

There may be trouble ahead...….. ;-) :-D

never mind what goes on them - is it scone as in gone or scone as in stone?

I don't like them tbh and detest jam :-)

I would sooner just have butter but, if I had to have the others, I would put the jam on first.

Jam first then topped up with mounds of cream

Was always served like that too in Cornish tea rooms when we holidayed in the 1979,s

Jam first to spread it even and whatever thickness you require then put the cream on top

From a logistical point of view - jam first - then you can overload with cream :-D
Also, jam has more 'sticky' properties than cream and will stay more firmly on the scone/butter.
If you put the cream on first, the jam has a tendency to 'pull' at the cream. :-(

Jam one half and cream the other, then you can choose.

I’m Cornish and Mr Owl is Devon. Mr Owl’s family are from Barton, Lincolnshire and Fauldhouse, West Lothian and mine are from St Just in Penwith, Cornwall and Glasgow. I’ve always preferred the Cornish way.

CREAM.... one of my many food hates, can't stand the stuff. Butter & jam suits me fine.

JoyLouise Report 21 Apr 2020 14:52

Jam first, followed by a huge clump of cream - so big it dabs the tip of your nose if you use fingers to pick up and eat the scone. :-D

There's a sight to sleep on. :-D :-D :-D

Devon and Cornwall practically come to blows over which way to eat a cream scone and to who invented the pasty.

For me it is cream last as it is very difficult to put the jam on top of the cream. As to pasties - as long as they taste nice I don't really care.

I've lived in both Cornwall and Devon, as a child - and learnt the hard way to do it 'proper', depending where I was.
Dad's side were 100% Cornish, and that's the way I do it now - wherever I am! :-D :-D

Jam first, although like Sharron I'd rather have butter!
