I have a Hoover washing machine,(now don;t want to speak too soon.) but have had it 20 odd years and still going strong.

Thankyou all for your advice and information. My current one is a Whirlpool Solutions, which is rented. I rang this morning to cancel it and was told it dated from 1998 - I knew I'd had it a long time! - and that in view of my "long and loyal service" they would give me a refund towards the cost of getting someone to take it away.

I was surprised, but it is a lot more practical to pay a bit extra and get the delivery men to take away the old one at the same time as bringing the new one.

I know more-or-less what I want, but it isn't always easy to translate the details on line into how it works in practice, so you have all been very helpful. :-) :-)
