JoyLouise - The Water Babies - I loved that book!
My children not so much.
Not sure if it's because I used (mainly) Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and
(occasionally) Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid as 'moral teachings' to them :-S
Actually, my youngest was a bit freaked out by it, because when she was younger, (before I read it to her) she had an imaginary friend - who was a child sweep.

Researching:

Vera I did read Alice in wonderland but it was not a favourite. I have never read The waterbabies. I loved Enid Blyton because the plots and settings seemed real to me and also had a monthly EB magazine called Sunny Stories. That was until I was 6 or 7 When I was 9 or 10 my parents ordered me to be delivered a Childrens' Newspaper which I loved.

Our daughter could read well by the time she went to school at 5, she was always ahead of her peers at reading. Her brother showed no interest in reading before school but by the age of 7 they were at the same stage in reading. Not sure what that proves.
