Did he have a wooden leg?

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Mar 2020 18:07

When I started school, one of the boys was off sick because he had put an axe into his leg.

.....just shows how careful my dad was with is children's safety - I was playing with the thing at about 8!

Sharron

I am pleased to have learned something.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 5 Mar 2020 17:24

Ah! That would explain it. :-D
Ours never had a 'step'!

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Mar 2020 16:54

Because I am nothing if not pedantic, I have looked it up and a rip/reap hook comes straight from the handle and a fag hook has a step to protect the hands and is used for trimming, which is all I have ever done with it.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 5 Mar 2020 14:32

That's the problem, Sharron.
You'd be amazed at how many different names there are for 'tag'
Also, I can't say 'folk' without keeping in the 'l' - a 'leftover' from living in Scotland, and having a broad Scottish accent (for survival) at the age of 5 - it sounds okay in a Scottish accent, but in English is just weird.
If I'm going to say the word, I have to imagine the word 'faux'. and put a 'k' on it
Neither my sister nor I can say the word 'tarpaulin' properly, either. :-(

I take a scythe to be the long handled, two handed implement Father Time and the Reaper use.

I think they are sometimes called reap hooks but who am I to argue with your family? It probably depends where you come from.

maggiewinchester Report 5 Mar 2020 13:40

'Fag hook' sounds interesting - then I looked it up.
We (as a family) called them scythe hooks.

May be stick to the fountain pen Sharron

That fag hook looks lethal :-0 :-0 :-0 ;-)

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Mar 2020 13:06

Because I might be alright at medieval but my technical abilities leave much to be desired.

Scan it and upload it, Doubt I could even if I knew what it meant. I can use a fag hook though!

That book looks interesting, I could read that.

It is very difficult to find out about the life of eels and it might not even be true about the Sargasso Sea.

Von

Von Report 5 Mar 2020 12:14

Not sure why you have to type it out again. Surely you can scan it and upload it to the computer ;-)

Just read an interesting book "Pie and Mash down the Roman road "
Lots of information on eels

Sorry Sharron to go off topic :-0 ;-)

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Mar 2020 12:03

Their seams would be intact though!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 5 Mar 2020 11:08

Think of the damage you could do with a fountain pen!
I mean, just physically you could 'have someone's eye out'. :-D :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Mar 2020 10:57

i think it might take a bit of time to inflict much damage with a seam ripper but best not to risk it I suppose.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 5 Mar 2020 00:43

:-D :-D :-D :-D

I found a fountain pen yesterday - shame I was looking for a seam ripper!

I eventually found 2 seam rippers, and exchanged one for cat food :-D

I forgot to buy cat food and a neighbour, (I met at the bus stop) when trying to buy a seam ripper, was informed they were an 'offensive weapon', and the shop no longer sold them.
She's recently lost a cat and her remaining one is very fussy, so she had a couple of boxes of sachets I could have, for free.
Well, fair exchange is no robbery! :-D :-D
