Technically he was knocked off the road by the other car....just saying....

"I am still at a loss why anyone would want to marry into the royal family. Obviously there are some advantages. You can knock another car off the road in Norfolk and a nice person from Land Rover will be on the phone that very evening to apologise for their vehicle having failed to anticipate the accident and offering a free, top-of-the-range replacement – seatbelts optional – to be delivered by first thing the next morning."

Prince Phillip has no income .The money comes from the Public Purse and goes to the Queen. So he can't pay a penny.

The Police do have "other ways"!

Two of my elderly neighbours who have been at fault in minor damage only collisions have been visited for a "talk" along the lines of "providing you give up your licence we will take no futher action"

With the help of family it has succeededd in getting them off the road.

Doubt HRH would agree though and there were injuries in this case.

RolloTheRed Report 24 Jan 2019 10:14

In order to secure a conviction for careless driving the prosecution not only has to prove that the events took place but also the defendant did not take appropriate measures. As a result a great many careless driving cases do not end up in court even when there is an injury. Moreover dangerous driving charges are often downgraded to careless driving even when there has been a fatality.

A couple of years ago a truck driver collided with a cyclist nr Southampton. The cyclist was killed. The driver's defence was that he did not see the cyclist due to the dazzle from the low winter sun. He was found not guillty.

Even if you have the right of way that does not remove the duty to avoid accidents. There is plenty of evidence from the crash scene to suggest that the driver of the MPV was going too fast for the conditions and was not being sufficiently observant.

Quite a few royals ( though not HRH ) have picked up points on their licence. BrianW 's comment that Philip is untouchable are wrong.

The CPS also have a duty in law to consider the public interest. It is debatable whether a public trial of the Queen's spouse would best serve the public interest. Probably not.

If the police decide that HRH was at fault I hope that they do prosecute.
Not because I have anything against the Prince but because I believe that all should be equal under the law.

However, the Chief Constable of Norfolk will be in a dilema:
Prosecute and say goodbye to his knighthood when he retires
Don't prosecute and be accused of unequal treatment by class

And I wonder how much an income-assessed fine would work out at?

David

If you feel you won't drive again then yes return your licence to the DVLA

Hubby did when he decided that was it and he said he felt free and calmed down as he had made the decision

If HRH Philip Duke of of Edinburgh was just a citizen, would there be all this fuss ?

David

David Report 21 Jan 2019 16:20

I'm an "older" driver. Haven't driven for almost six years due a combination of immobilisation due to injury and the lack of a suitable car.

Wondering if I should return my drivers licence to DVLA Swansea.

And she was the passenger not the driver

She said on the tv this morning the drivers husband has finally given her their insurance details by email after several requests
Looks like the driver isn't wanting to talk to her or the press

She seems to be hangling for personal contact from the royal family. Won't happen cause she has a big mouth

Also seems she has her hands open big time for a huge payout

Her 5 minutes of fame!

Apparently she/they have complained that no one has apologised. The advice to anyone involved in a car crash is not to do so. That implies 'fault'.

Media reports have also said that the Royal Household have tried to contact them without success.

There probably wouldn't be the degree of media attention if a younger Royal family member was driving.
