Thanks for the link Gwyn didn't know about the site. Seems it has nearly half a million locations World wide.
Knew locals had died but now can place them to homes I actually know.

So many countries became involved in the War.

Some lost such a huge proportion of their young men. New Zealand was one such country and has chosen to name each one in a national field of Remembrance.

Excellent display inside Exeter Cathedral.

Hope the weather improves for the important date.

It does indeed Liz....maybe if more were taught the history then they wouldn't vandalize the displays all around the country.

I will be in Chelmsford on the 11th and it's apparently the only day 'grandchildren' will be around, o.h.'s son forgot we were visiting, is working away, and the rest of the family are doing something else on the Saturday. I plan to visit the Cathedral on the 11th, the kids are old enougn to come along and learn about things, and if not, we will omly see them for a short time. The knowledge and history must be passed on to younger generations.

Caroline

Caroline Report 1 Nov 2018 14:27

Elizabeth it was Southampton Uni..

And now in Basingstoke people stealing poppy collections boxes from a veteran.

No shame some people.

ElizabethK Report 1 Nov 2018 10:00

Yes,and in Portsmouth too,I know the lossess were heavy in other places but 6,000+ were lost to Portsmouth, and this week there are several special commemoration events ,so perhaps it is prudent for the student union to keep a low profile!

Rant away Maggie your freedom was fought for...and before anyone says so was that silly girl...yes but she was talking rubbish and her timing stunk!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 31 Oct 2018 08:01

The room the painting is in has been locked, and student union employees have been advised not to wear their uniforms in public for fears over their safety as anger continues in the city. The woman is now 'on leave until further notice', and a petition calling for her to resign has also received over 10,000 signatures.

She receives £20,000 for being the head of the student union - if she's the best they can come up with - well!

Apart from her comment about the mural being rather badly timed, she failed to realise the picture is of real people.
No doubt if a 'token' female or person of colour had been added, she would have declared her faux 'horror' that these 'token' people weren't actually students at the University, and 'slammed' their policy in 1914!

People like her should realise history is history - it can be discussed, declared 'wrong', but shouldn't be 'brushed over' for the sake of modern morales.

Rant over :-D

This idiot - and her ilk - really annoy me!

When my youngest was at Uni, her best friend there came from Peckham - wonderful Cockney accent.
Some snotty 'I'm better then you', actually said to her 'How come you're here - you sound thick'!
No-one in that 'circle' spoke to 'I'm better than you' until she realised it's not a good idea to judge, and definitely not until you know, and apologised.

Not sure if the fact she's American makes any difference??

In all honesty, I don't think they care because in their eyes you're wrong and you need to be educated if you; in their words; glorify wars and don't recognise everyone that might possibly have been involved.

ElizabethK

ElizabethK Report 30 Oct 2018 15:33

Do they really not think of the offence they can cause or do they just not care as long as their opinions are voiced?

The British Legion etc will be very short of funds in the future if the "anti's" win!

Caroline

Caroline Report 30 Oct 2018 10:23

Basically, she's won though, I believe the painting is now locked up for its own safety...so she got part of what she wanted no longer on view.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 30 Oct 2018 00:01

Quite frankly, she's a shame to education.
Why didn't she just look the mural up on the internet or, failing that, didn't she think to ask why the mural was there?
To just go in feet first with 'I've got an opinion, and everyone will know about it and act on it, because I am who I am' (and paid £20,000 a year to be in that position) shows crass ineptitude.

...and this is University material. University - where education through research is the whole reason you are there..... :-\

Caroline

Caroline Report 29 Oct 2018 13:42

Exactly Elizabeth but also when you question things they often seem to think that means you just put forward a new view, a more modern view...like this young lady she wanted other ethnic groups reflected in a picture...well at that moment in time there wouldn't have been any other ethnic group or many if any ladies at the Uni. But ladies did help out so much both at home and as nurses near the front, and as you say it helped towards woman getting the vote etc.

ElizabethK

ElizabethK Report 29 Oct 2018 11:40

I know Uni is meant to help broaden their minds and question things but I suppose that the more time elapses the context we and the later generations see that War in is going to be lost.

They seem to not understand the extent to which that war was instrumental in the freedoms ,they, as women now enjoy.

The Southampton Uni girl has taken a leave of absence and it seems no one at the Uni is backing her up; The Cambridge one is new to me. Surely these examples show exactly why it's so important for us not to forget? Yes, many people around the World have and will die in various conflicts, but this was different and shouldn't be forgotten.
