Thankyou all for your replies - much appreciated.

I'm getting into 'a muddle' with this one - and I'm not even sure he's as relation - so for the time being I shall 'file' him away.

I hate to say this, though born and brought up in London, my knowledge of London is limited. If it's not SW then I'm lost.

Thanks,

M. Steer

There is a Bethnal Green Road in Clerkenwell - Google Bethnal Green Road, Clerkenwell

Address looks like - Guiness's Buildings

His wife's details would have been added when they married, as would the details of any children born whilst he was in the army.

HIs wife is named, because he married whilst he was in the Army.....the records include details from the marriage cert. Once he married, she became his next of kin...............

Potty,

Both his parents are named so I assume they were alive when he enlisted in 1908. He was in the Army for about 10 years. I don't fully understand the sequence of these Records - his wife is also named, though he didn't marry until a few years later.

Charlotte (is that a coincidence?!) when he enlisted he states that he was living in Clerkenwell (no exact address given) but his N.O.K., were (it seems) living in Bethnal Green Road.

These Records cover several years and I can't be certain which date each entry covers.

Thankyou all for your input.

Do you want me to have a look at the address and see if I can decipher it for you? I have local knowledge of Bethnal Green.

Were his parents dead when he enlisted and was it before he married? If so, she would have been his next of kin.

Thanks Reg,

I thought it might be his Sister but like you wondered why she would be named.

It would seem that Charlotte is his sister, but I can't imagine why her name would be recorded.......

The address is tricky.......perhaps someone with knowledge of the Bethnal Green area would be able to decipher/interpret it.

May I ask another favour please?

Image No. 3071 gives name & address of N.O.K., I'm having trouble reading this. I can read parent's names but can't figure out who Charlotte is or the address.

Does anyone have better eyesight that me?

Thanks,

M. Steer.

Thanks both.

Just been doing some checking - the 'Black & Tans' weren't in Ireland in 1908 (not until years later).

I just wondered if MAYBE one of my Father's relative's was having an 'adverse' effect on my Mother's family.

He 'joined up' at Stratford...............joined his regiment at Cork, which is presumably where they were stationed at the time

Reg,

His name was Charles Willliam Saywell - I must stress that he may not be a relative.

How or why would he have got/gone to Cork to enlist?

Thanks,

M. Steer

ErikaH Report 15 Dec 2007 17:12

If the DLI were stationed in Cork, he could have enlisted during the period they were there..........

You'd need to check records for the Regiment to establish where they were...........

Would you care to add his name?

Reg
