I can't find him in 1851 . . . . can anyone help please?

I don't know when they married I guess between 1851 & 1861.

Sarah's maiden name was Swales.

You'll need to know when they marriage..if his names been mistrancribed he'll be easier to pick up with either 1 or both parents

I've looked under Lester, Lister & anything that sounds like it but as yet found nothing!

Are you sure it's Lester and not Lister? On the 61 census it could be Lister.
Free BMD has a marriage of John Lister and Sarah Jane Day 1858 Stockton.
It's also John Lister on the Tees Valley Indexes.

Just looked back, Stu, and I see you have the wife as Sarah Swales.
Are you sure about that? A Sarah Swales married in Whitby 1856 but not to John Lester/Lister.

The same John Lister from the 61 census with 2 month old daughter Mary E. is on the 71 census, age 39, born Hetton le Hole, a widower with daughter Mary E., now 10, Sarah J., 9 and John J., 7. he has a housekeeper Mary Ann Day, born 1835 Whitby. (Sarah's sister?)

Margaret - That's the family I have found in the '61 & '71, but I can't find John in the '51!

I'm going to have to double check that his wife was a Swales!

There's a Sarah J. Day, born 1833 Whitby, who is a servant in Ugthorpe, Yorks.
Yes I'm still convinced his wife is Sarah J. Day.

It says shopman in the relationship column for John so I take it he worked in the grocer's shop which ties in with him being a grocer in 1861.

I know Sarah J Swales was born in Whitby c1833. Looking on the 1861 census there in only one Sarah J, born in Whitby, +/- 1 year of 1833 and that is the one married to John Lister. So I'm certain It's John Laidler in 1851 . . . . . all very confusing!

From this I would suggest that John Lister married Sarah J Day and not Sarah J Swales.
