HELP NEEDED PLEASE

A few months ago I wanted a copy of my family tree off Genesreunited , it came into my mail box as Gedcom (I know very little about computers) . I tried to put it on to a CD disc it would not let me do it.
I had a Swift Ancestry Family Tree Designer on my computer, which my daughter bought me a long time ago and I have never used. Because I did not know how at that time. Anyway last night we tried again to put it on a disc (NO) then to put it on to the Tree Designer (NO) - so I deleted the Tree Designer. We thought it was out of date. Genes reunited recommend the following Gedcom reading programmes.

1) Personal Ancestral File
2) Family Tree Maker = £60 max
3) Roots Magic £53 for V3 Platinum Edition, + £21 for UK Edition.
4 ) Family Tree and Legacy

My Daughter looked up the prices last night, her preference is NU 3.
So you can see we do not really know what to do=hence the help is needed.

Thank You

Rose

You can download Personal Ancestral File (PAF) free from www.familysearch.com It will be perfectly adequate for a while at least. Then look out for family history magazines having trial versions of other programs that you can play with or Google for demo versions. They all have similar functions but work slightly differently from one another so it pays to see which one you are most comfortable with. The tree you build on PAF can be loaded onto other programs as Gedcom once you've made your choice.

PS I prefer Family Historian rather than any of the ones you mention :-)

You can download Legacy for free. the free version is perfectly adequate for most needs. I have written a help file which tells you step by step in really simple terms how to download it, how to import a gedcom and all the basic things you need to use it. If you decide to use Legacy, I am most willing to send you the help.

Thank you Everybody.

I have not had a lot of time to go over the advice you have all so kindly given yet. Birthdays, visitors and cooking all the apples etc I have been given.

So this weekend I will decide what to do.

Question

Is anybody on Ancestry?

If so is it worth joining?
.
I am thinking instead of having xmas presents off my daughters I may put this suggestion to them ,helping towards the cost of a years subscription for Ancestry.
Every time I think I will have an evening looking up names on different sites I seem to be limited and some sites want you to pay to view. So will I be able to get all I want off Ancestry. Can you order Birth Certificates etc on line if so do they send them Via the computer or through the post?

Thank You
Rose

Hi Rose

I think you will find Ancestry a great help to your research especially with the census, BMD index, and other data is being put on by regular updates.

You can send for certificates via www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ follow the onscreen instructions and it normally takes between 5/10 days for postal delivery.

Good Luck with your research but be warned it is addictive.
