Hi
This looks like him?

Admiralty: Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Coastguard and related services: Officers' and Ratings' Service Records (Series II) ADM 29/60/539
Original page number: 539 George HARDY; Rating; Age on entry: [Not Given]; Dates served: 11 June 1859-1 November 1861; Date and Type of Application: Whitehall 8 July 1859 and other. For the additional following details Born: 21 May 1818, Devonport, Devon,

Getting paper copies is really easy..you need to pay online though....and not expensive...come by post...I've got a lot of my ancestors papers that way

Hi Joan, Is this the same Joan who helped give me the adm reference a couple days ago? From what Chris has said it looks as though the service period is to early for on line doc's but what about paper copies are they possible ? He is George Hardy born Stoke Damerel 21st May 1818

Thanks Chris, as I get older my attention span is getting shorter, I start to look at the research guides but something else takes my attention and I go off at a tangent, the last time it was the trefalgar lists!!!

Have a look at the section 'Military History' on the main NA site...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Gives a guide to whats available.

Right that answers it...

Online documents only cover 1873 to 1923.
You would need a manual search at Kew.

Hi Chris, Yes I did try but then I did the same thing for his grandson and could not get the record until I had his service number, ( provided through the people here), problem is I do not know how to get that myself !

No you don't need his service number to order the documents but of course there is the possibility they are not there!

This link takes you straight to the search page for seaman's records...Or have you already tried it?

Its great to look at the service history of your ancestors ,unless you are like me and are useless at getting them!!! With help I got grandads naval service history then found ( with help from other GR members) that g g grandad was also in the navy so tried to get his documents also.... and failed miserably. Only had his name etc from census returns, do I need his service number?
