Hi Evelyn - it came through as an email so not sure what happened there!
I've replied via email also!
You should see a picture and a green background. Scroll down and you will see - User notes, Introductions and then Help sections.
Click on the introductions and then at top left you will see a "new topic" button - that lets people know you're new to the site and needing help!
Same applies to the "Help" section - just add your query!
Further down is the "Scottish Army" section and a few links that may help.
It's a lot bigger than this site - far more sections and topics to read!

I know what you mean about being SP's best customer!! I always thought I was that person until May this year when I met a man from America who has over 10,000 images online and visits Edinburgh Gros every year!
Jock is the administrator and will probably not be online till later on.

Hi Woody,

I've registered on scotfsamtree and I'm just waiting on a reply from the administrator to log in!! When you say 'Jock Tamson' is he someone on that website? or someone on GR? I have downloaded and paid for almost every James Mcculloch McCulloch Mccullough Mculoch McCuloch McCulla McKulloch McCullock etc etc etc!!! every possible spelling! I am Scotlands Peoples best customer! hopefully scotfamtree will come up trumps! Thanks for the tip as I didn't know they existed! All my McCullochs are from Ayrshire!

Thanks Lynn

Hi Evelyn

If you try http://scotfamtree.11.forumer.com there's a good Military section.
Jock Tamson has a lot of military information including most of the census records for Maryhill Barracks.
He also comes from Ayr so may be able to help with local info.

Just a thought, but have you tried searching MacCulloch as well as McCulloch?

HI Marion,

Yes, Gilbert and Thomas were two of his brothers and that's my James. Oh yes I suppose they would need blacksmiths wouldn't they? I always think of soldiers as being just soldiers, if you see what I mean!! This man is so annoying me. I feel that in the whole scheme of 'family tree' things, this wasn't that long ago so he must be somewhere here!! I should have spoken to my granpa more, but I was only 14 when died and wasn't interested in family back then!

a sadler makes, repairs or sells saddles or other furnishings for horses.
Then theres the blacksmith both connected to horses.
Might be the same thing.

But if you are sure it says soldier, maybe he was a blacksmith in the army.

Now I've just had a thought. Does anyone know which regiments were stationed at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow in 1887? Or how I can find out?

Evelyn Report 3 Sep 2007 11:40

Hmm Don't know if that would be right as it said soldier and then his residence was a place in Glasgow called Maryhill(James was from Ayrshire) where theres a large soldiers barracks. Excuse my ignorance but what do saddlers do? Are they anything to do with blacksmiths? I know he was an apprentice blacksmith in 1881.

Hi PDH,

Well when I say I can't find a death for him, I mean in the scottish records. I could paper a wall with the certs I have from Scotlands People. All the deaths in Scotland are online up to 1956, as I imagine he would possibly be dead by then. (he would be 92) I would end up bankrupt if I started searching the english records! He may well have emigrated I suppose. I have searched through the passenger lists on findmypast and there was one passenger that might have been him, going to Canada but I'm completely lost. Don't know where to go from here......?

Hi Evelyn,
When you say you can't find a death for him, do you mean AT ALL?? I have an ancestor who deserted his wife, popped up on the other side of the country and lived to a ripe old age!
