My Great Great Grandfather, James Wilkinson, was born c1867 in Stockton on Tees. I have found him on the 1871, 1881 & 1901 census returns but NOT the 1891. I remember my Grandmother telling me that her Father had served in the Boer War. As far as I know there were two Boer Wars, the first was 1880-1881 so he would have been too young for that one. The second Boer War was 1899-1902, however his children were BORN in July 1899, July 1900, September 1901, Jan. 1903 and so on. So he must have been in England around October 1898 & October 1899 to father the first two of his children! So my question is where was he when the 1891 census was taken?

Stu, Don't dismiss that 1891 census so quickly. Remember, the information was probably given to the census enumerator by the head of the house, not your gt grandfather himself. Anyway, where is Garnforth with relation to Stockton????????????

Julie - Yes that is him on the 1901 census, it was HIS first marriage but my G Grandmothers SECOND marriage. I have a copy of their marriage cert. THEIR first two children were registered in the wifes first married name (Robinson) but were fathered by James Wilkinson! Sylvia - I do't know where Garnforth is! There is a Garforth close to Leeds.

Julie - John J & Daisy M are James Wilkinson's children EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS THEY ARE STEP CHILDREN. These two children were registered as Robinson BUT when they married they married as Wilkinson . . . . . that took me a very long time to work out ! ! ! My G Grandmother's first husband died in March 1898, long before these two children were conceived !

Louise, Thanks!! I was originally grom Lancashire, but been overseas almost 40 years. I was also intending Stu to think about that. I have this gut feeling that that entry IS his great grandfather! One way to sort it out would be for him to search on the censuses to see if he can find a James Wilkinson (or Wilkenson) born in Garnforth anywhere else. If not ..................................... that isn't proof, but it becomes more likely!!

Julie

Julie Report 29 Jul 2007 20:00

Daisy and John were probably registered as Robinson's as Mum & Dad weren't married yet

The James Wilkinson in Wolsingham from 'Garnforth' will be the one from Gainford who is in Wolsingham in 1881 as nephew to the Pentlands. I wonder if James from Stockton was in the army at some time and was abroad at the time of the census.
