If you have Portsmouth ancestors who died in WW1 and may be listed on Army or Navy memorials then try this site. It has a complete list of names and inscriptions as taken from the Guild Hall Square Cenotaph in Portsmouth. http://www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk/city-centre/cenotaph.htm |

What a wonderful site - so clear. Woldn't it be wonderful if all major towns completed the same exercise. Well worth a look, even if you have no relatives from the area. Very touching too, especially the casualty list for civilians. Thanks for the info. Jacqui |

I hope people find it useful - I had completely forgotten about my grandparents saying that some of my ancestors are on there. I used to play in Victoria Park which is just behind the Memorial and we always used to go up and read the inscriptions looking for our names. I didn't know they had a site until today and thought it might benefit those who do not have access to the monument itself. At least those people will never be forgotten. Take Care, -Kat |
