I just looked into BBC Parliament on Digital and there are about half a dozen members sitting - think the rest are in the pub!

Makes you wonder how this country is run, or not!

Thats it debate over and decision made, the lord chancellor is not going to release the census until the 100 year census rule has been met, then he will decide whether he will release the census. strictly speaking he does not have to do this and can have the census destroyed. the 1931 census has been destroyed in case it fell into german hands in WW2 and there wasn't one taken in 1941. so we are going to have to wait another 8 years.

Not a debate at all in my view, the Government had made up its mind in advance and that was it. Be interesting to see how many MPs actually were there and what the voting figures were. I doubt if anyone under 15 in 1911 is interested in whether or not data is released, so we are talking about the possibility of offending 108 year olds ! (One or both of them)

I'm really disappointed - was looking forward to seeing this census - I was sure the lure of money would convince them to release it early. How wrong can you be!!

God thats' made me so miserable now, i've never really watched things like that before, and thought there was going to be lots of arguments. Am I missing something? The government seem to say that the grounds for not releasing the census was that the general population would lose confidence in the government to keep records closed for 100 years and would therefore be reluctant to fill in future census's. Firstly, The 1911 gave no time limit on closure whereas since 1981 there is a guarentee of 100 years so those filling in the forms now could be assured of that. Secondly, If the census is closed for 100 years in order to protect those that may still be living, what about those that are over 100 years old, do they not count and as people are living longer does this mean that they will change future closures to 150 years? I say that they should ask the people that it affects i.e those age 93 plus, it is those people that the government are trying to protect without actually asking them if that is what they want! That's better got that off my chest. Sue
