I wonder if anyone can help? I sent off for my Grandads birth cert, I thought I had his birth date right - but they said they couldn't send the cert because the date didn't match the ref? He lived with us and I have his death cert - so I know when he passed away and what age he was etc. Does anyone know what I should do now? You've guessed it, I 'm new to this

Hi Lorraine, I wouldn't think that there would be two Arthur Clarkes with middle name Julius. I wonder if perhaps the date was out by a day or two. I know that my gran's birthdate came as a surprise to her family who'd always thought she was born on the 3rd December and birth certificate said 2nd. Heather

I always thought that my father was born on the 4th Feb. It turned out when I got his birth cert. that it was the 14th. Maybe he did not want to be a Valentine's baby. Did you order the cert from a local office or ONS? Paul

Thank you for your replies If you wouldn't mind checking for me - I hadn't tried it before so I might have got it wrong? He was Arthur Julius Clarke - I thought he was born on 29/10?1890....The ref: I sent off for was Oct-Dec 2C 37. He died aged 78 on 11/3/1969 death cert no.459467 in Southampton. Thank you! P.S. The reason I need his birth cert is that I don't know his father's name - I'm going to be stuck then because his father originated in Barbados, I think, although he married a Scots woman (Mc Arthur) and is buried somewhere here in Southampton....

Thank you Amanda.... I'm stumped because he was that age when he died - or so it says on his death cert? So it would make it 1890? Perhaps my local registry office would be able to help? Funny really because I should know where he was born but I don't! Thanks again anyway x

Right thank you Rachel. I'm going to try and check with one of only two uncles left to see if he knows at least where he was born x That's the ref: I used and they wouldn't send the cert.... I think I'll try it again. It must be that one I think

When you order the certificate, I'd not include the date of birth that you have. Like the others have said, some people give themselves the wrong one! Rachel

As you are in Southampton, it would be a good idea to contact your register office direct if you think the freebmd reference is likely to be your man. When you find out more about his father and when he died, the bereavement services people in Bugle Street, Southampton may be able to help you to track down his burial place, if indeed it was in Southampton.

Amanda - I can't keep saying the same thing really but T. Y. again.... I think I'll probably only get as far as my Gt Grandparents.... My Gt Grandad (his ancestors) were given a slave name so I don't think I'll get very far there!

Yes I saw that but I thought it might be just a typing error? I've been a bit rash and gone over and re-ordered the cert 2c 37 and just keep my fingers crossed?

Yes I certainly will - although they said it won't get here until about the 26th

Do you know I've just thought of something quite funny...My Grandad lived with an uncle before us and I expect he's got the very cert I'm looking for. Unfortunately my parents didn't see them very much so I can't really get in touch - ALTHOUGH I do have a cousin who could! I'm very tempted

I also checked 1837online to see what was on there and it does look like Julins, it may have been a "dirty" key on their typewriter and been a "u". It's definately there q/e Dec 1890. Rachel Also the surname on the register is Clark, without the "e". Maybe thats why they couldn't find it.

Hi Rachel - I think I'm going to get the wrong cert but because I'm new to this any cert will get me started if you know what I mean. Everyone seems to know what they're doing and I haven't a clue! Still perhaps if only I just get one break it'll start the ball rolling? x

I think the best bet is to find out the local office for Southampton. If you go to resource centre on the left of the screen, go to genuki, and there will be a list of all the local offices. Go to Southampton, to check if the office has changed to another district. Ring the relevant office & explain all the details that you have. Hopefully they will find your certificate and post it out to very quickly. The local offices generally are a lot faster than the GRO, but some local offices won't send out certs, they just refer you back to the GRO. Good luck. Rachel It's up to you if you want to wait to see if the GRO send you out the right one or not! Sorry if this has been a bit confusing!
