Hi Amanda, From the birth cert if looks like Spashall or Spashatt if he forgot to cross his Ts. If you search Spasha* on FreeBMD, apart from 2, they all occur in Westhampnett which is the district Pagham falls in. Crista

Hi Crista, I cant sleep, Amy has my head going round in circles, does this ever happen to you? I am sending you the copy of Laura's birth certificate, maybe you can help read Amy's maiden name. There is a very good chance that the amy you found could be the one. I trawled through the IGI and didn't get anything that close to the name spas*******. I will try and send copies of the census (once I've figured out how to do this). Thanks for all your help. Amanda, The only Nuneaton I know is in Warwickshire. I know it's been transcribed as Nuneaton but does it actually look like that on the census image? Crista, Thanks, see a fresh pair of eyes always works. I didn't even put this together as I've always thought of the eldest daughter being Elizabeth. Thanks for pointing this out, and thanks to Irene for the reference number. This afternoon, I paid to get the census image from 1901 online for Amy Williams, I could not wait any longer for ancestry to transcribe. You were so right, Amy is now widowed and back living with her youngest daughter who is now married and has a son. All in all a good afternoons work. Thanks again, you have both been a great help.

Amanda, I think Irene has found the oldest daughter. She was probably named Amy Elizabeth but known as Elizabeth to avoid confusion with her mother's name. Crista

Hi Crista, This could be my Amy on the 1901 census, I will have to wait til ancestry has transcribed all of the 1901 census to check it out. Thanks for helping. Hi Irene, My Amy was born with maiden name of Spasheald or something like this as it's not written very clear on her daughters birth certificate. She became Amy Marshall by the marriage to her first husband and Williams by her second marriage, so thanks for checking but this is not my Amy. Thanks again for you help. Amanda

Amanda I have found an Amy Elizabeth Marshall born 1864 June qtr Marylebone Middx 1 a 648. I wonder if anyone has the 1871 census for Somerset see what she has down as place of birth on that. Irene

Amanda, There's this widow I thought could be her. Amy Williams aged 63 born Sussex South Nuneaton Wedmore Living On Own Means There is obviously a transcription error on the birth place. It's probably Surrey South something. Might be worth getting someone to check the image. Crista

Hi Christa, Yes she did marry Benjamin Williams, Sep quarter, 1883, vol 5c, page 1098. I have her on the 1891 census, but could not see her on 1901. Thanks (Amanda in Ontario.)

Amanda, Did she marry Benjamin Williams? There's an Amy Williams on the 1901 and it says her place of birth is Sussex, South Nuneaton. That has to be a transcription error. If you can find what village she was born in there might be an entry for her on IGI. Crista

Hi Crista, For 1891, it says she was born in Surrey, South M or W******** the rest is a blur. However, her first born daughter was born in Middlesex, London and Surrey is London and/or very near. I now have christening dates for all the children except for the first born, have spent nearly 2 hours this evening trawling through IGI for christening of this one, I was hoping it may give me some info on what area the family could have lived at, at the time. Thanks to all of you who gave me some ideas. This evening I found that the elusive Amy Marshall (nee Spasheald ??) married again for the second time in 1883. On the 1891 Census she is found to be living with her second husband and last born daughter from her first marriage in Wedmore, Somerset. I now have the year/quarter and all relevant info to send for this marriage certificate. I hope this will give me her maiden name (hopefully which I will be able to read)!! As yet I still cannot locate a reference for her first marriage to William Marshall. I have looked on ancestry but nothing comes to light. William Marshall born c1820, Wedmore, Somerset. Amy Spasheald born c1835, Surrey, England. Elizabeth Amy Marshall, daur, b1864, Middlesex, London. Jane Elen Marshall, daur, b1866, Wedmore, Somerset. Florence Emma Marshall, daur, b1868, Wedmore, Somerset. Laura (Flory) Derenda Marshall, daur, b1871, W. Somerset. Rosina Berether Marshall, daur, b1874, Wedmore, Somerset. Alathea Lavinia Marshall, daur, b1878, Wedmore, Somerset. I have looked for a marriage between William and Amy in London and Somerset, but sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can help. putting spa*** into the 1901 census i came up with some beauties. spangenbery spanholty spatchurst spavold sparling i used random ages. certainly makes you wonder doesnt it. x
