Thank you all for your suggestions but I am unable to edit or delete as there are just too many links to the same name. I have emailed Genes and am waiting for a reply. Lindy:-(

When I first made a mess, I deleted the lot. When I made a second mistake - and many more since, what I do is go to the wrong person , remove name and replace it with 'unknown' So Uncle bobs wife that I had as Mary Wright is Unknown unknown. When I find the info I edit again and put the name in. Will this help? Regards Jeanie

Oh good people! DO NOT keep all your tree info solely on GC! If you have gone down this path export it to your own PC as soon as possible. Then back it up to CD-RW or whatever. Better still construct your tree offline using one of the more popular family tree packages, then when you want to put your tree on GC use the package to construct Gedcom: upload that to GC. And even if you do have your own information on your local PC everytime you change it, write it to a CD-RW as well, keep this as a backup. Apart from anything else GC is lamentably poor for putting any sort of additional information on, places of residence, occupation, personal notes, pictures, in fact it's very basic.

Hi Christine & Jaqueline, I have already tried that but it won't work. Somewhere along the line I did something wrong but cannot find where. I shall try and give a better explaination. I was adding the names of the three wives of my GGGRANDFATHER and the children from two of the wives. There were no children from the third wife. When it came to adding in the names of his PARENTS I found my GRANDPARENTS names in their place. Also, GGGRANDFATHER is now the 12th child of my GRANDPARENTS. In other words he is now one of my UNCLES. I then went into my GRANDPARENTS childred to delete this unwanted UNCLE but he is not listed as one of the childred. I hope I am making sense. All help is appreciated as I don't want to have to delete this branch which connects over one hundred people. Thank you Lindy

You can only delete someone if it does not leave another entry with no connection to the tree, so you have to work up from the children to the parents and so on. Wherever possible it is best to edit to the correct name.

Tracey, I keep getting the same message "Cannot delete relation who has more then one child or has both parents and children" Thanks, I shall have to contact G.C. Lindy;-)

Lindy, I've just been into my relations on my tree and edited my name and date of birth to something totally different and it worked okay for me. The only other thing i suppose is to contact GR and see if they can do anything but they don't seem to be very forthcoming with their replies these days.

Lindy Report 11 Oct 2004 15:07

Tracey, It is my tree on G.R. I think the problem developed because I have a number of generations with the same names all down the line. I really don't know. Lindy

tracey, just had another thought. If you have your own family history programme, download the gedcom from gc, then put it in the programme you have. Change the details from there, then create another gedcom and upload that into gc after deleting the whole tree, just leaving yourself

Tracey

Tracey Report 11 Oct 2004 15:02

Lindy, Is it your tree on GR or another programme? I know i've done this myself on GR and it's worked ok.

Sorry Tracey, wasn`t being flippant, when I saw parents and grandparents, I thought you have only just started entering. Not sure how the site works, but maybe you can change the names you have entered, rather than trying to delete them first. Is there an edit facility

Lindy

Lindy Report 11 Oct 2004 14:58

Tracey, I tried that but it won't work. Lindy :-(

Tracey Report 11 Oct 2004 14:47
