Karen Report 6 Nov 2004 11:54

Hi Shirley Thanks for the offer. The person I'm looking for was born in Southampton, but was in London by 1851 :- Charles Waterman born 1828 in Southampton, his father was James Waterman but I know nothing about him, apart from his occupation was Bricklayer. If your census isnt surname indexed dont spend too long searching as I know that the Southampton area is probably a huge one. Karen

I am trying to trace a William Ansell born approx 1812 in Petersfield and by the 1871 census living in South Harting. I know he was married to 'Elizabeth' by 1871 but I have no idea when although she was also born in Petersfield. Any info would be fantastic. Many thanks Michele

Hi That's a generous offer. If it's possible I have a couple of families who are still a bit vague and would benefit by some 1841 info. I'd really like to know about Eli & (Mari)Ann(e), 'cos I can't quite work out whether she's one person or two!! I think they'll be in East Worldham (but there's a risk they'll be in Farnham or even Portsea!): Eli CHRISTMAS b1806 b East Worldham (Mari)Ann(e) CHRISTMAS b1810 Calcutta (perhaps!) (They married in Portsea) Ann CHRISTMAS bap 1829 Alton Charlotte CHRISTMAS bap 1831 Alton William CHRISTMAS b 1833 Wymering/Portsdown Eliza CHRISTMAS bap 1835 Farnham Henry Pafoot CHRISTMAS b 1836-7 Farnham James CHRISTMAS b1838-9 Lymington - or Farnham! Thomas Waldren CHRISTMAS b 1841 Basingstoke The other family is: William RUSSELL b1814-5 Portchester Frances RUSSELL b1815(?) ?Portchester The first child I know about wasn't born until 1848, but they were married in 1839, so I'd love to know if there were more children. By 1875, William was Keeper of Portchester Castle. I don't know what he was doing before that. It's possible that there are Navy links. When I can find my Winchester Allegations CD, I'll see if I can find any BOOTYs for Deb. I do understand that it may not be feasible to find any of these. Don't strain your eyes on my behalf! best wishes Christine

Hi I haven't been able to find any BOOTYs but did manage to find a BOOTE and a BOOTT: WILLS, John of Colebroke, co., Devon, & Jane BOOTE, of St Maurice, Winchester, sp., at St M., 11 Aug., 1724 ANNETT, Moses, of St Maurice, Winchester, husbandman, w., & Elizabeth BOOTT, of St John's, near W., w., at St J or St Maurice, 18 Apl., 1730 I even tried BEAUTY, without success. These are licences/allegations, so they aren't proof of the actual wedding - just the likelihood. It's not in the right dates, I think, for where you've got to at the moment, but I thought I might as well share it, in case it's useful one day. Christine

Hi Shirley Any information you could find on the family of HENRY BUDD (b either 1793 or 1798) who was married to MARY. He was a blacksmith I believe and lived in Sheet, Nr Petersfield. I believe they had 9 children born between 1823 & 1845 Many Thanks Steve

Hi, Deb My Hampshire Grandad used to tease me by calling me his "Booty". I used to get really offended because I thought he was saying I looked like a boot. It was, of course, the reverse: he was calling me his "Beauty"! At five, I wasn't up to that sort of subtlety. But that's why I was wondering whether the name might have been a corruption as a result of a regional accent. As you say, you'll have to go with the current spelling until something fairly definitive allows you to make a jump. good hunting Christine

Thanks for the offer Shirley Does the 1841 census include Isle of Wight? My ancestors were I believe living in isle of Wight by that time having migrated from Hampshire. As of the 1851 census we have Charles BULL c 1793 (born Beaulieu/Boldre Hampshire?) Maria BULL c 1797 Isaac BULL c 1829 Charles BULL c 1838 Timothy BULL c 1841 Sarah BULL c 1842 living in Northwood, Cowes, Isle of Wight Would it be possible to find out whether the family appears on the 1841 census. I suspect there would have been more children between Isaac and Charles Jr who may have left home by 1851. There may also be relatives left in the Beaulieu/Boldre area. Any information would be much appreciated. Wade
