I bit the bullet & paid to use 1837. I was looking for a marriage in Gravesend in 1844. I found the marriage on the Kent registry office but I was looking for the GRO number. Well I have searched all of 1844 & 1845, but no marriage. Also.......how do you know who they married???

Karen She's not in the 1st part of 1843 or any of 1846 either. I'd be tempted to order the cert direct from the Register Office. Looking at their website they have an online ordering facility Lou

ok, thanks for trying Lou. Wonder why it wouldn't be on there?? ALSo, if I did find someone I wanted on 1837, how do I find out who they married???

Without buying the cert, you can't, unless you have an idea who she MIGHT have married to cross check the reference. Do you have any idea who her spouse was? Lou

not for certain......I though it would be like Free BMD where they give you a couple of choices.

Hannah may well be there but mis-spelt. I had this the other week, could find my Joseph but when I went to check the corresponding spouse she wasn't there. Someone finally found her for me but her surname spelt like Bradshaw not Bradbury so she was on a totally different page! Lou

It's a pity you can't search by town,......that would be much easiier

The advantage of ordering from the local RO is that it's likely to be quicker. Also the local records are the source-data for the GRO lists and so may have records which got missed, and certainly are one transcription less (at that time). If you know the groom's name (or father's or whatever) you can specify that as a checking-term so you could pay £3 for them to look for, but not send, a wrong cert. You'd only pay the £7 if the info matched what you'd specified. Christine

So would it be Gravesend Registry office that I would order them through, Or the Kent reg??

It normally tells you how/where to apply for a cert on the site where you found the reference. Christine
