I have just got my dads birth cert through and it names his mothers maiden name as SOIKES. I am trying to find his parents marriage but keep drawing a blank on his mums name. Could it have been misinterpreted? Bernie

If you give you your dad's full name here and the district he was born, I'll have a look on 1837online and see wht it gives as mother's maiden name. Kath. x

There is nothing coming up for that surname on Ancestry or FreeBMD, is the writing bad? Perhaps you cannot see it properly Sam

Bernie

Bernie Report 19 Feb 2005 23:01

On my dads birth cert it def says Soikes, its driving me nuts because I can't find his mums marriage to Jacob Silverman. I have been right back to 1905.

KathleenBell

It definitely looks like Soikes in the index on 1837online. Kath. x

could the name be STOKES

Bernie

Bernie Report 19 Feb 2005 23:02

I know Kath, do you think it has been changed?

Smiley

Smiley Report 19 Feb 2005 23:04

I've found the surnames on Google, they are both Jewish names, does that sound correct? Sam

Bernie

Bernie Report 19 Feb 2005 23:06

Stokes sounds a possibility, why is it soikes on my dads birth cert then? Surely that would have been noticed.

Bernie

Bernie Report 19 Feb 2005 23:08

Thanks for all your help guys, gonna go and look on 1837 and see if I can tie up stokes and silverman for a marriage.

What is your grandads name. There are quite a lot of Sivermans on Ancestry. Do you know if your dad was the eldest child or were there others before him (just to narrow down the date for a marriage). Kath. x

I checked that marriage Bernice, it was not to a Soikes. You can only cross reference on 1837 online, IF you know the partners surname, the alternative is to order the certificate. Sam
