Christine in Herts Report 24 Mar 2005 08:25

Hello All An update: With all your help (plus being seduced into joining Ancetry uk, myself!) I've got almost all the likely info, short of buying certificates, for the HAWTON family: DoB, PoB, DoM, PoM, some DoD, Censuses from 1871-1901. Some earlier Census stuff would be useful if I can identify the correct people - e.g. Robert HAWTON and Mary Jane nee BRYANT as married in 1861: St Germans, Devonport, Portsea??? as children in 1841 and 1851 (both born 1829-31) St Germans Will trawl my own bookmarks but extra eyes would be useful. With some help towards finding the imaginative versions of HICKEY in the censuses and their transcriptions (HEEKY & HECKY!) I'm at much the same stage with that family. James HICKEY b 1845 City of London - in 1851 & 1861 censuses. The WENHAM family of Tonbridge has proved surprisingly elusive. I have some lists of names but nothing to pin them down as a family, apart for the IGI baptism for Deborah and using the ref to find some siblings. Nothing for Deborah (b 1844 Dec Q Tonbridge) in 1851 or 1861. Many thanks for your help. I reckon we'll have a very creditable sketch for Debbie come her birthday next week. Having got all this info together - I thought I should set it out in a separate thread in case there's anyone who can pick up on the info for their own trees. Christine

Thanks, Sandra - you've earned your surname! Ancestry seems to count visits, whether it's the same image or another, so I seem to have come to the end of my allowance before seeing them all. As I said in reaction to the first - I think I really shall have to succumb - at the very least to the free trial - to experience what everyone seems so enthusiastic about. It's certainly useful stuff - I'm very grateful for all your work on my (& Debbie's) behalf. Yes, there is a lot to get through - I'll get some more done when I get home. I'm borrowing a friend's computer at the moment after doing a bit of singing to help out with music technology - recording. many thanks Christine

Thanks, Sandra I'm at work at the moment, so can't tell you exactly. (I shall have to put the Excel & Word stuff onto my Palm so I can check when I'm out!) Basically, with what I found for myself plus what you kind folks have found for me (and as far as I recall)... I've got the HAWTON family pretty much sorted for DoB & PoB (incl GRO refs). They start off in Maker/Rame (east Cornwall, almost Plymouth) with RN connections, and take in Portsea and Gillingham ending up in East London & Essex. I've got them on some censuses, but not all. I'll have to check back when I get home, but I think I've got: 1881 (from the LDS site) 1891 - can't remember about that - I'd certainly have looked on FreeCEN. 1901 (not the full transcription or image, but by deducing from the DoB & PoB info I had) 1841 (from the Cornwall Census Project) 1871 (from Kindred Konnections) There are some bits of the family who have escaped one census or another, of course, but the main gap seems to be: 1851? As you'll see from above, we've managed to get some census stuff for the HICKEYs. They seem to be based in City of London and West Ham. The WENHAM family started off in Tonbridge (or thereabouts). If you look right at the beginning of the thread, you'll see what I had at that point. I've tried to make sure I've let you know when I've found anything more so that people don't waste time looking for something we've got already. must finish my lunchbreak now! cheers Christine

Thanks, Christopher Yes, HAWTON does seem to be an unusual name. That's what's made it worthwhile even starting the project, I suppose. With a more common name, I shouldn't have been able to get anywhere without applying for certificates. Even when she left me with the impression they came from Taunton or Torquay or something, it couldn't throw me off the scent because those places simply don't figure. I know what I'm doing can't be far wide of the mark because I asked her what her mother's first name was yesterday and it ties in with the set of info I have and was one of the names I was guessing it would be. She also mentioned a maritime connection - which ties in as well. Thank you for the snippet. I've noted it in case it fits in later. thanks Christine

I've found James HICKEY's birth on the FreeBMD image: James HICKEY b 1845 Mar Q, St Geo, Southwark IV-481 So he really doesn't seem to have been born in Ireland. Perhaps he'll turn up in one of the other nearby counties... or not! Christine PS - And thank you to you, too, Pat

Thank you Christopher for all your work while I was out. That's both kind and helpful. Those HICKEYs all seem to be in the kind of area where Debbie's are, so I suspect they're linked in somehow. I'll have to do a bit more FreeBMD image-trawling I think! thanks, again Christine

Christopher - just had a quick look at the images on FreeBMD while waiting for some printing to finish. John B HAWTON & Thomas B HAWTON were twins born 1855-6 in Kingsand (St Germans registration area). There's no 1855 images for 1855 other than for December and none of those is for H. Haven't got as far as March or June 1856. In 1871 they're both: age 15, app shipwright; Maker (on the Rame peninsula). Could you pursue that one - if not more usefully employed? Christine

Just found the FreeBMD image for Robert HAWTON: b 1866 Q4 St Germans 5c - ??? (Am going to have to work on that when I get home from church). Back later Christine

Thanks, Christopher (delay while my husband had a turn) There seem to be three possible James HICKEYs on the 1861 census. Unfortunately none of them comes up when I put London or City for place of birth - or any combination thereof that I've thought of so far. In the 1881 census he's: age 36, born in City of London, and living at 29 Graham Rd, London. I presume that's the Dalston one because all the children are born in Hackney. 1837's 1861 records have: James HICKEY, 16 in Rotherhithe - along with John & Mary (both 40) and Patrick (19) James HICKEY, 17 in Shoreditch - along with a Male (56), Elizabeth (45), Lucy, Emma, Maria & Alfred James HICKEY, 17 in Staines - along with Ellen (40) and Catherine (15) I'd really like to know if one of them is Debbie's, but it would mean looking at up to three images, I guess, to find the one born in City of London - or however it's been described - and it might be none of them. If you feel that's too great a risk of wasting credits (after all - why don't I buy my own!) then perhaps I can come back to you when I work out which BDM records don't look as if they are accessible on FreeBMD by searching or on images? If you're busy elsewhere by then, then that's my problem. By the way - I had a chat with Debbie this afternoon (while my husband was having his turn on the computer) and she obviously has a general idea that I've taken an interest (I hope she hasn't grasped my real intention - it's meant to be a surprise). Her cousin has promised to write down what she knows and post it to her - so we may get some more amunition that way! many thanks, all, for your help Christine

Christine in Herts Report 20 Mar 2005 14:31

Christopher If your 1837 credits are genuinely spare, any of the names where I've only got estimated birthdates (i.e. from censuses) would be good to narrow down to particular quarters with a GRO (or local) ref. I think I've tried FreeBMD for them all, so the remainder are ones where I didn't find a transcription or an image (that doesn't mean there wasn't one - just that I didn't spot it!). Might still be worth checking in case I just missed something. We seem to be doing really well on the HAWTONs; anything to increase knowledge on the HICKEYs or WENHAMs would be great, too. Thanks to you all Christine PS - if there's occupation info on the censues, that can be quite interesting, and sometimes useful to make a choice between two otherwise equal candidates in another context.

Thank you, Lyla, that's great. I've also just tracked the marriage of Robert HAWTON & Mary Jane BRYANT in 1854 (on FreeBMD) Between us we'll be giving my friend, Debbie (presumably named for her ancestor Deborah WENHAM) a real treat! Thank you all. Off to add this next batch in, now. Christine

Just got back from church and waded through the list this far on the offchance and find that you've been turning up trumps! Will collect up what's here and see where it gets me. I haven't got the images (except for one GRO index list for Deborah Noakes WENHAM's birth) - just the transcriptions. Thank you all so much... off to work on it all! Christine

nudge for Saturday's readers... any census stuff? - or do you recognise the names? Christine

Christine in Herts Report 18 Mar 2005 23:27

I did find the early Robert HAWTON, but the person in whose tree he figured probably knows less about him than I do (and he isn't even mine!) because he wasn't a direct-line ancestor and was in the periphery. But thanks for the thought - it's all too easy to miss the obvious, and, besides, there are new names being added all the time, so it's worth going back to check - which I only thought of as I wrote it. So thanks for triggering the idea. thanks Christine PS - I use different sheets for each bit of family and I decided to make it more visually interesting by using the cell colour-fill so that the actual members of a family are distiguished (blue/pink) by gender. Marriers-in are left white.

At the moment I'm just using the layout you can achieve with Excel. It isn't bad and it's quite readable. I was really hoping that someone might recognise the combinations of names and be able to give me a bit more for her. Christine
