This is starting to drive me mad!! I am told that the 1901 census is complete yet I can't find my rellies that I have on 1881 & 1891. I have tried all the differnt spellings I can think of, any ideas? My GGrandmother was Elizabeth Golden b1891 in York, her parents were William and Sarah. Please can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks Dawn

Dear Dawn The 1901 census is NOTORIOUS for mistranscriptions. Have you tried looking for Elizabeth using just her first name, age and place of birth? I have found relatives surname Smoothy as Lenorthey & Timothy, Purvey as Curvey etc. nell

Hi Dawn, I can't seem to find them either. Where were they living in 1891?

Just a thought but have you tried Ellis Island to see if they went to USA, a lot did at that time.

Hi Dawn You will find that if the family were not present at their address on the day of the census then they are listed as visitors in someone elses house. So if Mum & Dad decided to go to a party and the children were at another member of the family's house then that is were they will all be listed. This is the problem with having relatives who don't stay at home!! Steve

Hi Dawn, been on Ellis Island for you but no sign of them there.

Steve ,it doesn't matter where they were, they would still be listed as somewhere. Together (or dad down the local tavern possible) but most are there somewhere if they were in the country

On the 1891 census they were living in York in the civil parish of Saint Dennis, municipal ward of walmgate. They were definately still in York in 1901, in fact she didn't move very far all her life. Elizabeth doesn't appear on the 1891 census as she wasn't born until July. Will try and search without a surname and see if I can find them that way. Thanks for all your help. Dawn

I should have been writing them down as i tried but here goes; Golden, Goiden, Goulden, Goldew, Goldiu, Gaddin, Godden, Solden, Folden. Probably more but i'm not sure. Dawn

You've tried all I can think of except perhaps 'Gorden' or maybe 'Garden'. I've been trying to say Golden with a Yorkshire accent but I'm not very good at them. Vivienne

I've tried just Elizabeth with birth year + - 2 years but nothing for York. Debby

I don't yet have her birth cert but I have her death cert and I am in contact with her daughter (who i am going to see tomorrow, so would like to be able to take the 1901 records with me aswell).

How sure are you about the year of birth? I have quite a few relatives that are not sure how old they are becase their parents lied to get the kids into school and work early. There is an Elizabeth E Golden aged 6 Daughter born Whitby Yorkshire. Sorry but I cant cheak the rest of the household for the parents There's also 2 Elizabeth Golden's on the 1891 census born about 1889 in Yorkshire Prehaps SKS will be able to access the familys for you

Thanks Vivienne More luck than anything - checked them out on the 1891 - tried the unusual names first but nothing. Noticed wife Sarah born in Liverpool so searched using just Sarah, Liverpool and approx birth year! I've found lots of mine that way - I've still quite a few to find though - Nells right - some of the mistranscriptions are amazing! Debby
