Have you got Walter's parents marriage cert? Knowing their ages and fathers names etc, might help find them in 1881 and before that. If you can find them before marriage, then that will give you places of birth which might help with the struggle to find the family in the later census records. Just wanted to say that I've been looking for Walter too, but can't find him for you....... Makes a change from my Charlotte JONES in Southampton? further down this page. Maddening, isnt it?

I'm frantically looking too! I did find a family on 1891, my heart flipped......The name was nothing like 'Prestidge' but I thought they could have been massively mistranscribed. I got all excited as Thomas was head, wife was Charlotte (she could have used middle name) and the had 1yr old Walter with them, born Hinckley. The ages are massively out though, eg Charlotte is 37yrs. Oh well, I'll keep looking!

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 25 Jul 2005 09:58

I saw them too, Helen! You might need to view the image of every possible Walter, (or Harold?) that fits the clues. I found someone that way last night, indexed under the name of the family above her in the census, so nothing like her own clearly written name.

Tillot Report 25 Jul 2005 10:07

Two great minds eh? I agree just searching under 1st names, also trying middle names. I too have found a family of mine indexed as the family above, which doesn't make things easy does it? My bet is this is what has happened to the Prestidges' Keep searching!

I am determined to crack this. I have found Harold Prestidge living with Thomas's brother Daniel exactly right age but put down as son on 1891 census Then on 1901 census I have found Ernest Harold with him exactly right age but put down as son I need Walter Harold. What do you think of looking along those lines? Linda

So Thomas P was an Ag lab aged 18 in 1881, but was an ordinance surveyor, when? Was it on son's marriage cert, or on Thomas' own marriage cert? Sarah

Linda G

Linda G Report 25 Jul 2005 13:33

Hi Sarah, Thomas was listed as an ordnance surveyor on Walters birth cert and on Walters marriage cert. Have just ordered Thomas's marriage cert. LINDA

Phoenix Report 25 Jul 2005 14:11

I don't know the back story, so a few questions: 1. How do you know Thomas was still alive at the time of his son's wedding? Even a witness's signature might be brother rather than father. Do you have a wedding photo? 2. As you haven't found Walter on any census, how did you know his birthplace? 3. If the family is from Leicester/ Northants, why is the son marrying in Brighton?

Hi Brenda, I have Walter's birth certificate 27th September 1889 registered in Hinckley all the family on both sides for 2 generations seem to have come from there. I have his marriage certificate for 1913 in Brighton with Thomas as his father. In 1913 at Walters marriage he was a soldier and stationed at Preston Barracks in Brighton. My husband was born in Brighton in 1942 and his father was born there in 1916 (Walters son). Thanks for trying to help they've got me stumped!!!! Linda

Merry

Merry Report 25 Jul 2005 15:04

I don't mean to cast doubts, but wouldn't it be quite unusual for someone to be an Ag Lab at 18 and a surveyor 8 years later? I would have expected him to have had a higher level of education to be a surveyor??? But, I know, anythings possible!! I just wondered if you were looking at the right family in 1881? Sarah
