Yes, its only a 'hobby' or a game, really. But games have rules and if you don't obey them, then you are cheating! I havent got EVERY certificate for every event but the theory is that I WILL one day get them all. Until then, they are pencilled in, either faintly, or more firmly if I have other supporting evidence. The only 'Company' who is making a fortune out of me is the GRO - who are these companies you are talking about, Dwaine? I am possibly lucky in that my family is well-documented in other ways, going back centuries - wills, removal orders, bastardy orders, court cases and so on and the weight of evidence these provide is oiften enough to decide that so and so IS the son of so and so, even if I cant find a baptism - that gets heavily pencilled in, but never inked in! I cannot for the life of me see the point in doing this unless you do it accurately. I have seen so many proudly presented trees which I can fault in an instant and I think to myself 'You idiot' and never take that person seriously again. Finally, it will never be more than 99% accurate anyway - as has just been pointed out, the children of Mrs Brown are not necessarily the children of Mr Brown, but only Mrs Brown knows the truth of that! I have effectively done one name studies several times when trying to get information on someone. Taken down everyone with that name in the area from places like the IGI, censuses etc then tried to link them together. Two sisters married two people with the same name from a completely different part of the country. It was fairly certain that they must be related so I collected together lots of information on that name from the two parts of the country. I eventually was able to prove that they were brothers. It can be useful because I have just had an enquiry about that name so able to pass on the data to someone else and it might of use to them. Martin
