Please could any one help me find one of my great aunts. She was a Miss Rosie Trolloppe and I have a record of her marriage in 1913 to Albert Edward Wilton in Kelston near Bath. His mother was landlady of the local pub and I believe Rose was a popular barmaid.

Sorry, I too laughed when I read this request, it reminded me of my Grandmother, she always reffered to 'loose women' as good time girls and Trollops! No offence intended! Lib

Do you have the marriage certificate? If so what was her father's name and occupation? If not this is the reference for the certificate:- March qtr. 1913, Keynsham, 5c, 1155 Kelston is in the Keynsham registration district. It gives her name as Rose and Trollope with one 'p'. Kath. x

I was going ot have a look on http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ to see if I could find your landlady, but the site is suddenly v-e-r-r-r-y s-l-o-w-w-w-w. As I'm supposed to be going into the office to do a couple of hours work (now I've established that my migraine has dissolved under the onlaught of my magic medication), I think I'd better leave that to you! They have Post Office Bath Directory, 1911 Post Office Bath Directory, 1902 which look promising and, probably, some others of the same era - certainly some earlier ones. Christine

Thanks everyone. Yes I found the marriage reference on Bath BMD. I also have a death for her in 1917 aged 37 which means she would have been born about 1880 which fits with Christine's wine merchant. I know Calne in Wiltshire. I have never heard of one in Hampshire. Does any one have access to the 1881 or 1891 census to look for Trollope's I think the term came from the loose women in Anthony's novels. If he was my relative I would not be too happy. I think he lived in Bath but was too early to be Rose's dad. I associate him with the introduction of the penny post in 1842.

Had another go on the Historical Directories... Post Office Bath Directory, 1911 Post Office Bath Directory, 1902 Post Office Bath Directory, 1895 have: WILTON, Mrs. Ann, The Crown, Kelston Post Office Bath Directory, 1884-85 WILTON, James, The Crown, Kelston but Post Office Bath Directory, 1876-77 (p 317) Kelston section has SQUIRES, James, Crown P H and Kelly's Directory of Somerset, 1914 Kelston section has TROLLOPE, Edward W, The Crown I think that might give you something to work with? If you go to the site you can see the images of the Directories for yourself (and get addicted like I am?). Christine

Couldn't resist coming back to this and have had my reward! Here's Rosie's father's birth and marriage: Name: Trollop, Hugh Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1849 District: Warminster County: Wiltshire Volume: 8 Page: 486 Name: TROLLOP, Hugh Record Type: Marriages Quarter: March Year: 1870 District: Bath County: Avon Somerset Volume: 5c Page: 968 only bride called Julia: LUSTY, Julia (sic!!!!) My husband takes a mild interest in my addiction, so I told him about this wonderful find. His reaction: they should have hyphenated the surnames. What a wonderful thought... Rosie Lusty-Trollop, the barmaid! Christine

Rosie Lusty Trollope the bar maid - you could not make that up. It only goes to justify the strap line of the thread. Thankyou every one for your hard work. I think the Edward Trollope who took over the license of the crown was Rose's brother who married Albert's sister Florence. Florrie Trollope the bar maid does not have the same ring. Incidently it is a very nice pub if any one is in the area. Its these little details that make family history research more rewarding.
