Has anyone got any advice on what to do next if someone is not on the 1901 census when in theory they should be? There also isnt any birth registration for this person? I have a marriage certificate that indicates year of birth should be 1896.

its John Henry Gater born august 1896 Hampstead london. Married in 1919 to mabel bettyes. earliest record of him is 1915 and that was when he joined london fusiliers. I got that from medal card at Kew. He spent his life in willesden area of london. His father was Frank, deceased on wedding cert. John was a silversmith then decorator.

thanks but its not that John Henry! That one died in 1929 of TB. I est year of birth from his age at marriage. He was 26 when he wed in 1919, therefore his year of birth should be 1893, its getting late and my maths are not great lol!

Marie Report 12 Aug 2005 00:00

Hi father occupation was painter. John Henry death cert says dob 1st august 1893 hampstead, died 20th oct 1977 willesden. His occupation on retirement says time keeper. I just check certificates!

Marie

Marie Report 12 Aug 2005 00:02

also on wedding cert one of the witnesses was a francis gater

If he was 26 when he married in 1919, depending on when he married and when his birthday was, his 26th birthday could have been in 1918 or 1919, which would give a birth year of 1892 or 1893. Dates of birth on death certificates are very often wrong, as it depends on who gives the information, and the older someone is, the more chance for the year to be out by one or two years. Kath. x

Hi again I have searched births from 1890 to 1898 to no avail. I have also searched for frank Gater marriages and births, but cannot make a connection until i find birth of john. The frank i find are not located in the london area, i know there was plenty of movement then but because im not aware of any connection outside of the london area i cant jump to any conclusions. I am now coming to the conclusion that john may have been illegitimate, he gave his elder son the name john richard harris gater and the harris doesnt come from his wifes family. I have been trying to trace him since 2000, and its driving me mad! Thanks all

Is there achance that he was born in Scotland? If so that would explain not being on freebmd or 1837. The only chap I could find was john henry gater Tiverton 5b 391 mar 1896
