Hi Kath Sorry I've been unable to get back on-line until now!! The Frederick George you found was Harry and unless he led 2 different lives wouldnt be my grandfather!! this man was a confectioner & tobaconist and died at home with his son (FE George) has to be another family!!!! I had already found this and sent for certificate. Thank you so much for all your help tho!! Val:~)

I would concentrate on looking for Watt marriages - then at least you only have to worry about how many ''L'' 's in Lilian!! Watch out for spouse surname; George, or Frederick(s) etc Have you tried the electoral roll for the address where the last child was born, to see how long his/their name(s) appear? Merry

You could try searching for the marriage of Lilian WATT and see if any of the possible 'husbands' match any of the names mentioned. I couldn't find my grandparents marriage on GRO until I searched on my grandmother's name. Grandfather's had been mis transcribed.

Found this death on 1837online. The age would be about right and if he died at the end of the year, would be registered in the next quarter. Frederick H. George, age 45 March qtr. 1928, West Ham, 4a, 215 Hope this helps and that it turns out to be the right man. Kath. x

I don't know if they will have a list of staff from that long ago, but you could contact BT (the modern equivalent) and ask them. They might have an archive department. Kath. x

Have checked the marriages on 1837online from Jan. 1918 to Dec. 1921 and there is no Frederick Henry George marrying a Watt. The name being transposed could be a good theory. In which case you might be looking for a Mr. Henry George Frederick. Kath. x

Heather Report 28 Sep 2005 12:17

Highly unlikely I know BUT many a time official papers have used my husbands and sons surname as their first name (Martin). Any wild chance your guy has had his name transposed? You said he came over during after WW1 - then he wouldnt be on any census that is available here.

I would put the 1901 chap in a drawer for the mo. Not saying he is definitely wrong, but.....born in wrong place, born at wrong time, living here when he should have been in Oz in 1901....... When and where was the first child born? Was there more than one child, and was Fred down as ''Frederick Henry George, draughtsman'' on all the certificates for the children? Merry

Found this on Google:- (see last paragraph) Index to Events in Telecommunications History 1881 Following the court judgement of the previous year the Post Office proceeded to convert some of its telegraph service exchanges for use as telephone exchanges. The first was Swansea, opened on 23 March, followed by Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Bradford and Middlesbrough. ABC telegraph instruments were replaced by telephones. NOTE Other sources contradict this date and indicate that Swansea telephone exchange was not opened until 22 October 1883 and that the first Post Office exchanges were in fact in Newport and Cardiff in South Wales, both opened on 31 August 1881. The Provincial Telephone Company was floated in February with a capital of £75,000 to promote telephone companies. The National Telephone Company was formed in March to exploit the market in Scotland, the Midlands and Ireland. Other companies were the Lancashire and Cheshire Telephonic Exchange Companies (capital £250,000) in May and the Northern District Telephone Company (capital £100,000) in December. Kath. x

Hi Merry This man, my Grandfather (I CANNOT FIND) all we know is he was Frederick Henry (George is the surname) (no certificate) supposedly born in Sydney Oz, in 1881. He came over to Manchester UK during or just after WW1 met and married (no certificate) my Gran Lilian Watt (born Chorlton Manchester in October 1902.(have her birth certificate) He worked as a Draughtsman while over here and supposedly died in 1927 (no certificate) So as you can see its hopeless!! Its as if he never existed only that hes down on the children birth certificate!!!! I have found on 1901 census a Frederick George a draughtsman but aged 27 workin for N. Telp Co.???? Where and what is it? (I assume a telephone company, can we find out anything about the company and if they had lists of draughtsmen working? maybe then find out if he went to Manchester?) (this man is a little older than expected ) also was born in Islington London???!!!! Have we been led up a garden path?? Thanks for reading this Merry Val:~)

Merry Report 28 Sep 2005 11:30

Do you mean he had three given names, or is George the surname? Can you give some dates/places for him (or roughly?) and his surname, if you haven't given it already!!! I take it he is no longer alive? Do you have his death cert? Do you have his marriage cert? If you do, what was his father's name and occupation? Merry

Val :~) from West Wirral Report 28 Sep 2005 11:21

Hello to you both, thankyou for replying!! My grandfather was Frederick (Henry) George!! I cannot find a Frederick Henry George so I wondered if his second given name could have been shortened from something else, to look up a Frederick (?) Hope this is helping you to understand my request!! Val:~)

Heather Report 28 Sep 2005 11:10

Henry is usually called Harry. I remember mum and dad having a friend called 'Hen'. But that would be obvious. May be your guy prefers his second name?
