I ordered 18 a month ago, four couldn't be found, but had the other 14. Hadn't ordered any for a long long time though and saved for ages for them. M.

I got 14 once and about 5 were wrong so was very disappointed am being more careful now but its hard, I still feel the urge ooohhh.

eek - and thats English Certs - Scottish ones are £13 each so even more!

Don't feel bad - how much would you spend a month on a different hobby (OK I know it's more of an obsession, but you know what I mean). I recently bought a new tennis racquet, which was $200, and nobody batted an eyelid. New tennis shoes every three months at about $45 a pop. A can of tennis balls for each match almost $3, coaching $17 an hour (my share) and so on. I reckon if you eat at home more often, do research in the evenings instead of going to the movies, borrow books from the library instead of buying them, and don't ever tell anyone in your family just how much you spend, you're OK. Hi, When you consider the amount of money some people spend on cigarettes and booze and BOTH of those can damage your health as well as your wallet. At least BMD certs don't injure your well being! I also order certs on a bulk basis. If you can afford it, why not? Nobody thinks twice about having swanky meals in a restaurant because that is the 'done thing' and very socially acceptable and yet (if you don't mind my crude comparison) that swanky meal ends up in the lavatory bowl the next day! At least the certs are yours to keep and pass on to your loved ones. As long as you aren't borrowing from anyone to buy the certs and your family aren't going without, then I don't think there is a problem. Everyone has different ideas of what money should be spent on. My view is I work hard for my money and I'm entitled to spend it how I see fit. I don't give a damn what others think. The day I ask them for money is the day they can tell me how to spend it! (Tee-Hee). Cheers, Horatia

We have got that many certs now, collected over 20 years mind you, that we have bought a fireproof safe to keep them in. Only need another 14 to complete the direct line back as far as we can go on both sides. We realised how much this had cost us over the years and that an insurance company would never believe us in the event of them being destroyed. Margaret

Hi again, Those that order lots of certificates will have the satisfaction of knowing that their family history is as accurate as it can be, and not just guesswork. The certificates aren't cheap by any means, but if you really want to have an accurate family tree and are serious about your hobby, then I'm afraid certs have to be ordered. I usally prioritise ordering certs that will tell me something I don't know. I especially prize certs that will give me maiden names or causes of death in someone who hasn't lived very long. If I hadn't ordered so many certificates, my knowledge of my family would be so much thinner. Some certificates have told me things I wasn't happy to read; but I prefer truth in my family history (it's better than fantasy). Details on certificates have led me off into other areas of research. All I can say is that they have book tokens, Marks & Spencer Tokens and CD Tokens - how about BMD Certificate tokens! LOL!!!! Cheers, Horatia

Horatia, You're right, apart from being proof that your ancestors are who you say they are, the certificates tell you so much more. I especially like the witnesses on marriage certificates. They obviously were people who meant a lot to the bride and groom, and were often relatives. (Gary, Maria Barnes was Thomas Allard's sister) One of the latest batch I just received told me that the couple married in a village I hadn't previously associated with either family. And the witnesses, when I traced them in the censuses, led me to other connections within both families. All of which pad out the story of my family into something more than just names and dates.
