Merry, Harriet Childs was indeed the bride. I did think of that. It's a good possibility isn't it? I mean, they did marry fairly late in life (for the time!) so she could have been a widow. I'll have to try and research her more. thanks Merry:)

I've seen that in 1861 Charles Waller was still single. Is his bride Harriet Childs, m 1867? Anyway, whoever she was, could she be on her second marriage? Maybe she had children from her first marriage and a dau became Mrs Creed? Merry

You're all too nice on here you know that?;) I'm looking at RG10/1855 1871 census. In the household of Charles Waller, there is a young boy called Robert. It's his surname I'm not a 100% on. I think Creed, as the e's look like the e in Margaret above. What do you think?

Merry

Merry Report 6 Feb 2006 20:31

Yes, you can keep asking!!! We like showing off (if we can read it, that is!!!) Merry

Nell, I know what you mean! I've come across some interesting spellings, including giving people the totally wrong surname! I do usually do the comparison thing. On this particular page I'm looking at now I've made the surname into Creed, going on the writing on teh rest of the page. however, I can't find anything under that name anywhere else. It might be that it's just not obvious, but as the name is hard to read I wasn't sure if I'd read it wrong. And I can't keep asking people here, they'll get fed up!

I also find it useful, if I can't decipher something on a census, to look at other words on the page in the same handwriting that I CAN read and see if that helps work out the words I'm struggling with. Some enumerators have their own quirks. I found on one census the enumerator had listed everyone's house as 'a cotage' and all the females called Emma were spelt Emmah. He also recorded all the Georges as Goerge! nell

I think there is something on Ancestry, but I can't find it. You could try googling 'old handwriting' or paleontology. nell
