I have been trawling for Mary Ann Groves whose birth year alternates between 1841,42, 48 and 49. Now I can find a Mary Ann Groves 4 quarter of 1841 Lambeth registration. Do you reckon this could be her? In theory I would have thought she would be Southwark.

Presumably she says she's born St Geo the Martyr on a census? She could be wrong. Who's to say? I suppose you could order the cert on spec, asking for father's name as a checking point, or some other fact you know. Lambeth Created 1st July 1837. In Surrey until 1889. Sub-districts : Brixton; Kennington; Kennington First; Kennington Second; Lambeth Church; Lambeth Church First; Lambeth Church Second; Norwood; Stockwell; Waterloo Road; Waterloo Road First; Waterloo Road Second. GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-1930). Lambeth. Registers now in Lambeth district. St. George Southwark Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1870 (incorporated into St. Saviour Southwark district). In Surrey. Sub-districts : Borough Road; Kent Road; London Road. GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-69). Southwark St. George. Registers now in Southwark district.

Thanks Nell, possibly not right. She is on the 1851 as St George in the East, Surrey (!!) Bit of a mistake there then. I have found her baptism on IGI as St George the Martyr. On the 1861 she is down as Southwark. Carry on trawling I guess.

But is that IGI record extracted or just submitted?

Wondered whether to go for one of the siblings? 2 of them are shown as St Margarets, Middlesex. Never heard of that one.

Merry Report 12 Feb 2006 20:03

Holborn! Actually, Im going down to London 4 March - going to a theatre with eldest boy and then he is paying for eats - its my birthday. Also have to scatter my dear dads ashes in the Thames at Dockland. He always said he wanted half in Paddock Woods, where he used to go 'opping as a youngster and half in the Thames. Well we did Paddock Woods a couple of weeks ago. Husband deliberated about using the Great Escape method down his trouser leg, but in the end we just went for it - totally illegal, we know, but I promised dad. If anyone ever visits the Hop Museum, say hello to my dad .

Sorry, missed out the L!! I do know how to spell (and pronounce!!) it really LOL Will watch out for you on the national news re The Thames and your lovely dad......... For goodness sake don't let hubby try the trouser-leg method there, or there may be a LARGE splash!! Merry

May I suggest that Lambeth, Southwark or anywhere else could have been the of place of birth - place of baptism that you are basing on is only a general clue for you and only a walk away from the Reg offices. To exaggerate the point the birth could have taken place in Lands End and baptism still in London area, by the date you are looking at trains were a means of transport.

Thanks Jo, I am getting so bored looking at the same records over and over again, hoping a new one will appear. I dont think she was the most precise girl - she has Rotherhithe on the 1871. Not very consistent, is she, let alone the span of years for her birth. I cant find her siblings either. I think I will go for the Lambeth one and just specify fathers name. Thanks guys, so glad I have you all as a sounding board.

Totally forgot to mention that St Margaret's is Brentford District, for what it's worth! Merry

Heather

Heather Report 12 Feb 2006 21:49

Ah, now Brentford, Im sure I saw the siblings names in Brentford district. Oh hum, back to ******** ancestry. Thanks Merry, though there is always the thought that the mother of a sibling isnt necessarily her mum. Though her name is Mary Ann too, so I suppose a good bet.

Heather, Lambeth and Southwark are next door to each other. Sue

Heather Report 12 Feb 2006 22:22

Yes, I am again waivering towards sending for that one. If she were in Old Kent Road, that would be Lambeth wouldnt it but would be under Southwark aswell if you were to ask someone. Oh sod it, Ill go for that one. Nite nite guys.

Heather, Think a little more positively about the period you are searching. Rotherhithe, Lambeth and Southwark were all in Surrey. You could/can walk easily from Rotherhithe to Southwark and Lambeth they are a stones throw from each other. In all likelihood you have the right person and she just moved dwelling now and then. If she was a single gal then in all probability she would not have stayed put for long. You have to consider social conditions as they were not necessarily align them as to how they are now. Most of the area that you have mentioned were not exactly the Mayfairs of the period though much of it was 'middle class' depends on what side of the Dover Road you lived.. If you know the roads that are given on censuses you may get an idea of what sort of family she was part of - See http://www.umich.edu/%7Erisotto/imagemap.html and then go to the third row from bottom and 5th from right to left - gives you an idea. You can also consider that Rotherhithe and Lambeth had workhouses ! though records of the Rotherhithe have been 'lost'.

Heather Report 12 Feb 2006 22:44

Many thanks Jo - I am actually a Bermondsey gal meself, so I do know the area. Thats very kind of you. I have the Charles Booth note books for the area too - which is brilliant if anyone has a number of families in the area. The worrying thing with this girl was she seemed to change age and pob on every census and event! More confusing was the census where all her siblings are shown born Middx (the family were in Shoreditch) and she is shown 'St George in the East, Surrey' (hence mixing two areas!!!). Im beginning to think she was just dozey. Many thanks for your input. If you are interested in the area, there are some lovely books at Southwark Archives. Especially Bermondsey and Rotherhithe remembered which Stephen Humphrey, the archivist, put together himself.
