Kate, I trawlled the images on Ancestry again and up she popped Moe - I'd seen that one but on all others he was born in Devon - even the index for his birth is in Devon (Okehampton Mar 1842). I can't see why he would change his place of birth to Wilts.

Lunar, this is the only one i could find in 1861, Aaron osborne head married 22yrs factory labourer, born preston Wiltshire. Ann s Osborne 22yrs wife of above, born Lyneham wiltshire. Aaron osborne son 1yr born Lyneham Wiltshire. i know its not your Aaron, or is it? he could have been married twice...MOE!.

Yes - I was hoping that putting the names the other way round might find my g-g-mother Hannah BENNETT in 1871, but there are lots of people (male & female) with Bennett as a first name. I suppose it's not all that odd - it's a contraction of Benedict. But then I tried finding my husband's ancestors Sarah & John GOULD in 1861, but there were lots of people (male & female) with Gould as a first name and I really hadn't expected that. I did find some transposed Gould SARAHs (are some transcribers daft! - or perhaps mind-numbed), but they weren't mine. Good luck with your hunt. Christine

Ok just found her.... Chambers Martha, Bedwelty 11a 126 I could sware she wasn't when I looked before!!! Just need to find my Aaron in 1861 now!!

Kate - I found those four too but couldn't see tham on the BMD's but will look again Christine - I did see you thread and tryied it, I was amased at how many peoplw had Osborn as a first name or Aaron as a surname, and I sill failed to find him

Have you tried searching for him with his name back-to-front? I set up a thread yesterday, or so, because I realised that I'd seen a whole lot of names transcribed as if their surnames were their given names, and vice versa. That was mainly in 1891, I think, but I did find some in other censuses. Christine

You could try looking for marriages for the following Marthas whose birthplace is given as Ebbw Vale in 1861, about the right age: Chambers, James, Jones, Rice. Kate.

His wife is Martha in 1871. Kate.

Actually just tried that and he is the only reference for those numbers. This is the reference for the page before Marriages Sep 1864 Morgans Catherine Bedwelty 11a 125 Don't suppose you could cross reference to census returns and see if his wife was Catherine? Julie

If you go to free bmd you can put in just the references with no name and everyone married in that place and on that page for that quarter will come up. You usually get 3 couples. I've found that really useful for figuring out which certificate to send off for. Julie

I don't have the patience to trawl the whole quarter unfortunatly - will leave that for when i'm board to death

well you do have another option if you've got time........ you could trawl through the whole of that 1/4 on Ancestrys bmds, and match the reference no. lol. helps as you already now her 1st name too not something i'd like to do myself though, lol

Jane that's great, I'll just have to wait so I can cross reference the brides name, as I'm not willing to risk £3 on the off chance. I could ask at the RO in Cardiff as the certificate would be cheaper from there.

Hi Jess 1841 Gidley, Devon (Parents and older siblings only) 1851 Gidleigh, Devon 1861 Missing 1871 Bedwellty, Monmouthshire 1881 Bargoed (Gelligear), Glamorgan 1891 Bargoed, Glamorgan 1901 Deceased - wife and children still in Bargoed.

Geographically, where was he in the census that you have found?

Jane - He's registered as Aaron for his birth and death, and all censuses (1841 - 1891) except 1861. I had trouble in 1841 with him and the family being writen as Osburn but he's still not listed as that in 1861 and he died c. 1894. Also he only had 1 sister that I can find on any census - Martha b.c.1837. Teresa - I did wonder if he was at sea but as my history is rubbish I didn't know if he could have been fighting somewhere. He's driving me batty I cant find his marriage so have no idea of his wifes Maiden name and he's missing in 1861 - ahhhhhhhh! if he wasn't already dead I could kill him!!

also had a look but nothing in 1861 census. In1871 census, living in Monmouthshire. Didn't run away to sea did he? He'd be the rght age to want a bit of an adventure.
