The calendar used to reckon the AD year from Lady Day to Lady Day (25 March). On the old system April 1734 and February 1734 were ten months apart. The change to using 1 January was officially made in 1752 (and the dropping of 11 days, which caused riots, happened at the same time. Catholic countries had dropped the days in 1582). Note also that in the Yorkshire Diocese from about 1760 details of couples getting married were supposed to include parents details - some vicars did, some didn't! |

Hi All, I have copied and pasted all this useful information. However can anyone tell me were the census always done in April each year? I know during the war there was no census carried out but the 1851 1861, 1871, 1881, 189 and 1901 was it always April?? Betty |
