There's a Henry Bull in Writhlington Somerset on the 1861 census: James Bull abt 1816 Paulton, Somerset, England Head Jane Bull abt 1817 Mid Norton, Somerset, England Wife Eliza Jane Bull abt 1859 Paulton, Somerset, England Daughter Henry James Bull abt 1856 Paulton, Somerset, England Son Mary Ann Bull abt 1850 Mid Norton, Somerset, England Daughter Thomas Bull abt 1843 Mid Norton, Somerset, England Son William John Bull abt 1852 Mid Norton, Somerset, England Son He looks a more likely candidate. His father, James, a blacksmith, could be Zachariah living under his second name. In 1871 they are still there at Frome Hill: James Bull abt 1816 Paulton, Somerset, England Head Jane Bull abt 1818 Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England Wife Eliza J Bull abt 1859 Paulton, Somerset, England Daughter Henry Jas Bull abt 1857 Paulton, Somerset, England Son William Jno Bull abt 1854 Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England Son Henry turns up married in 1881 at Waterloo Terrace Somerset Place, Radstock, Somerset, England : Henry J. Bull abt 1857 Paulton, Somerset, England Lodger (Head) Harriett Bull abt 1857 Clandown, Somerset, England Wife Walter J. Bull abt 1879 Clandown, Somerset, England Son Henry is an engine fitter at white Hart Rd, Midsomer Norton in 1891: Henry J Bull abt 1856 Paulton, Somerset, England Head Harriet Bull abt 1857 Clandown, Somerset, England Wife Louisa Bull abt 1884 Clandown, Somerset, England Daughter Ruth Bull abt 1886 Clandown, Somerset, England Daughter Tom Bull abt 1882 Clandown, Somerset, England Son Walter Bull abt 1879 Clandown, Somerset, England Son

Sorry, I was in a muddle about Arthur, I thought he was Henry senior's brother rather than his son for some stupid reason, that's why I kept asking about him. Kate.

Are you sure your Zechariah died in 1849? The reason I ask is that, astonishingly, there were two Zechariah Bulls living at the same time. In the 1841 census a 20 year old miller called Zechariah Bull was living at Lionel Street, Slom Mill, Birmingham with 15 year old Charles Bull. I would bet that this is the Zechariah who died in 1849 and yours was still alive.

Hi Kate. Not sure if Zachariah and Mary had a daughter alxo called Mary, think they had one called Ann (born in Wales) c1840. Arthurs parents were the same as my grandfathers, Henry and Annette Bull. Sue

Kate Report 22 Mar 2006 23:41

I don't suppose Zachariah and Mary had a daughter Mary who could have been Henry's mother did they? Sometimes an illegitimate child would put their grandfather's name down as father on their marriage cert. I don't think you said what Arthur's parents' details on his birth cert were, did you? Kate.

Hi again, just thought would add, i've looked at all Henrys on cencus, none have father Zachariah. So either fibbing about name of father - seems a strange name to pick though or, maybe Henry wasn't his given name, or - not really sure! Have to go to bed now - got to be up early, will check back tomorrow evening, if thats ok. Thanks for all your help. Sue :)

Kate. No, on the birth cert i have, it just says Mary Bull, nothing else. It might just be a coincidence that the Zachariah i found married a Mary (Curtis) Sue

Have you thought of approaching the Singer Sewing Machine company? They may have kept records. They have been going over 150 years. Singer Sewing Company 1224 Heil Quaker Blvd. P.O. Box 7017 LaVergne, TN 37086

On the 1891 census I notice Arthurs middle initials were E R, does this confirm on the birth cert you have? Suzanne

Kate

Kate Report 22 Mar 2006 23:02

On Henry's birth certificate, does it give any previous surname for Mary? Because if she was Zachariah's widow, you would expect it to say 'Mary Bull, formerly... whatever' Kate.

Hi again Suzanne I'd be so glad of your help, do seem to be going round in circles. Harry married Florence Annie Goode in 1921, fathers occupation was Traveller , . Mothers name on birth cert 1893 Romford was Annette Clara Bull - formely Winteridge. Yes details are the same on Arthur Roger's cert, apart from occupationbeing Agent for Singer sewing machine company. Same as on 1910 cencus. Sue :)

Sue Report 22 Mar 2006 22:47

Hi Helen. On My Grandfather Harry Bull's marriage cert, it says Henrys occupation -Traveller. On birth cert for Harry (i'm sure right one) says Agent for singer sewing machines. On 1901 census says commssion agent, and on 1891 says clerk at ship works / coffee tavern and boarding house keeper. Sue

Well things do seem a bit out of kilter (a shame as you have obviously worked hard to get it together). The only thing I can think of to dois to go back to square one and try following the trail again? I would be happy to go through it but Id need a starting apoint. Where did Harry Marry in 1921 and what was his fathers occupation? If you have Harry's birth cert what does it say his mothers name was and does this correspond with Arthur Rogers parents? Suzanne
